Tuscon has some amazing hidden away gems for really great down-home eatin. From sublime Mexican burritos to pizza to amazing greasey breakfast joints - Tuscon has it all, you just need to know where to find it. Here are just some of my favorite restaurants as a long time resident here in Tuscon:
- El Guero Canelo - The Sonora style carne asada is TO DIE FOR. Even normal fare like the hot dogs are sublime. Not for weight watchers - this is some serious Mexican fare.
- Bison Witches Bar & Deli - Local favorite, serving half sandwich and bread bowl soup combinations. Try the Tuscon sandwich with a bread bowl of clam chowder. Beyond that, everything is quite good here - you can’t go wrong. The space is small, but the portions are big - highly recommended!
- Zachary’s Pizza - The original comes from Berkeley, CA - but this one does it justice. Amazing stuffed chicken pizza unlike anything you’ve ever tasted! Try the T-Rex too - more meat than you can handle.
- Frog & Firkin - Great atmoshphere and superb location. Amazing beer selection - this is a great place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon and people watch over lunch and a good beer.
- Feast Tasteful Takeout - in the mood for some great takeout? This place does great takeout for a reasonable price. The highlights are the Knuckle Sandwich, Roasted Pork Sandwich, and Goat Cheese Lumpia. The Gnocci is great too. Great service, with a family-owned feel.
- El Charro Cafe - This is an old time establishment that is a local standby. They don’t serve your traditional Mexican fare, they have some exotic additions which really give Mexican food a twist! Try the Caren Seca and the Chicken Chimichanga - you won’t be disappointed!
- Beyond Bread - If you like freshly baked sourdough bread you’ll love this place. This is a local chain that has really popular with Tuscon locals. Quite an amazing bakery, you’ll know it as soon as you walk in. Try the Sticky Bun and Russian Tea Cakes.
- BK Hotdogs - Ok, so this is not exactly your typical gourmet choice, but it is such a favorite of locals that I had to mention it. Mexican style hotdogs simply can’t be beat. They put the works on their hotdogs, down to spicy salsa, and it is a heavenly experience (especially after a few beers at the local pub!)
- Bob Dobbs’ Bar & Grill - BURGERS. Can I say that again? Burgers! Incredible burgers. With homemade fries. It’s your classic American burger joint with a great crowd. Try the Bob burger - it has an amazing soy sauce on it, which sounds strange, but is strangely amazing!
- Bobo’s Restaurant - Grub a dub dub. Greasy breakfast place - perfect for curing hangovers. But seriously good - a great option for any brunch or breakfast. Hashbrowns here must be tried, as do the apple pancakes. You will not be disappointed with a breakfast experience here!
