I am a self-proclaimed curly hair expert. I’ve had curly hair since I was 13 and I know how challening it can be. Don’t believe me…my seventh grade yearbook photo would convince you. I made all of the classic mistakes. But over the last decade, I perfected my routine, and I now know how beautiful my curls can be. I If you follow my steps, your curly hair can be completly awesome too!
1. Every Other Day is More than Enough
Curly hair is normally dry and coarse. Washing it everday will dry it out. Try washing it no more than every other day.
2. Condition, Condtion, Condition
Curly haird needs moisture. Use a mosturizing conditioner everyday. I use whatever is on sale at the grocery store. (No need to buy salon products. I’ve used the most expensive products available and the stuff at the grocery store works just as well). Leave it in for at least 5 minutes. Run your fingers through your hair to get it as detangled as possible.
3. Throw Away Your Brush
Never use a brush. The brush bristles will upset the curl pattern. Use a comb to detangle wet hair.
4. Just Say No To the Towel Turban
Do not wrap your bath towel around your wet hair. Curly hair should be styled wet. Just ring out any extra water after you comb it.
5. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Product
Curly hair needs styling product to hold the curl and protect against frizz. Apply gel or mousse to wet hair. If you have coarse hair use gel. If your hair is thin or fine use mousse. I suggests using the cheapest stuff you can find at the grocery store.
6. My secret….twirling.
This is what really makes curly hair look great. Grab about about a 2 inch section of hair. Twirl it into a a tight strand. Then just let go. Do this to your whole head. You should kind of look like you have dreads.
7. Dry Time
It is best to let your hair hair dry. But if you don’t have the time, use a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment.
8. Loosen Up
Once your curls are dry, lightly run your fingers through your "twirled" curls. Don’t overdue it! You just want to make your curls look soft and bouncy.
9. Draw Inspiration from the 80s
The 80s were full of some truly horrible fashion and beauty mistakes, but one thing that decade got right is hairspray. Believe me, hairspray is your friend! Don’t fear it! Embrace the hairspray! Give your entire hair a light misting. Once again, use the cheap stuff.
10. Rock Your Curls!
Wear your curls with confidence. When people compliment you, do not say, "Ah, I hate my curls. I wish it were straight." Instead simply say, "Thank you."
