February 14 is celebrated and marketed as a special day for romance. In 2007 the National Retail Federation estimated that we spent $16.9 billion on gifts for this one day alone. No need this year to go broke trying to prove your love to someone. There are many thoughtful memorable ideas that can be utilized to reduce Valentine’s Day spending.
To prevent overspending, view this day just as you would the Christmas holidays; have a plan, make a list of gifts, greeting cards, etc. that you will purchase. Stick to a budget to minimize spending. Be creative! What things will really bring joy to others? Is it chocolate candy, diamond jewelry, roses or just a drawn bath after a hard day’s work? Will the recipient remember the gift? Below are suggestions for singles, those in relationships with/out children, family and friends.
Prepare a meal at home. Take out the china, lace tablecloth, centerpiece and crystal. All of the beautiful things you have packed away or on display in the china cabinet. If it’s just you and your significant other this can be a romantic meal. On the other hand if you have children get them involved. If they are old enough they can help set the table and prepare the meal. To save time on meal preparation, visit the freezer section of the grocery store. Frozen vegetables can easily be steamed and they look fresh. You can purchase an entree and prepare it according to the package directions. Serve it on your beautiful china or other dinnerware.
Have more money to spend? Purchase “take out” and serve it as if you had prepared the meal yourself. If a group of friends and/or your children will be dining with you, a simple inexpensive entree such as spaghetti served with a sauce or lasagna is a good choice. Conclude with Valentine’s Day dessert.
Have a Movie Marathon. Single? Grab some popcorn and other goodies, curl up on the sofa and watch a couple of good movies (romantic if you desire). Don’t want to be alone? Invite friends and ask each one to bring a snack or other food to enjoy.
Girlfriends Photo Shoot. There is no reason why you should not have fun because you are an adult. Invite your girlfriends over. Ask them to bring a couple outfits; casual, formal whatever they like. Have a Supermodel Photo Shoot. Find out all which angles that make you all look absolutely fabulous and “downright” gorgeous. Serve appetizers and a non-alcoholic beverage. Email the pictures to your friends or make a slideshow.
Luxurious bubble bath – Get everything you need, before getting into the tub to enjoy this treat. Add your favorite bubble bath, bath salt or fragrant/essential oil to the water as the tub fills. Soak as long as you want. No need rush! Set a calm and relaxing mood with soft music, candles or dimmed light. Use a night light will if you do not have a dimmer for your bathroom lights.
Create a PowerPoint slideshow. Select pictures of you and your spouse, partner, family or friends. If you do not have enough personal pictures; find meaningful graphics online or your own personal graphics library. Add music and special captions if you desire. For example—“When I think of you I smile.” Your presentation can be emailed.
There are so many creative ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day. Put your creative mind to work. Don’t forget about aging parents, other relatives and co-workers. We can change the scope of what Valentine’s Day really means by can showing love and friendship to—parents, children, family, neighbors and friends. This day is not just for lovers!
