It is difficult for car owners these days: the escalating cost of gas is causing problems for drivers nationwide. If you are finding yourself at your wit’s end, wondering how to cope with the rising costs of fuel for your car, you can use our tips to maximize the money you spend. There are many techniques you can implement to save money, and we’ve listed a few of the best ones below:

Maintain your vehicle

This is really important: a car that runs with less than perfect efficiency will burn fuel at a higher rate, costing you more money every day. If you have clogged filters or an engine that is not running properly, your car may be burning 15 to 20 percent more gas than it has to. Be sure to have your car serviced on a regular basis, and ask the mechanic about gas-saving repairs to your engine.

Don’t Idle

You waste precious fuel when you idle the engine. You are better off turning off and restarting your vehicle as needed. Idling is bad for the environment, as well: try to break the idling habit and your gas dollars will go further.

Check Your Fuel Cap

If the fuel cap on your car doesn’t fit properly, gas will be wasted every time you run your car. This is a common problem that most people don’t think of, so have a look at your gas cap and be certain it is tight fitting, with no gaps to let out precious fuel. Don’t let your gasoline turn into vapor when you drive your vehicle.

Roll Up Your Windows

The added resistance of driving with your windows down will burn up as much as 15 per cent more gas every time you are on the road. By rolling up your windows, you can maximize the operation of your car, and optimize mileage from every tank of gas.

Pump Up Your Tires

Fully inflated tires will allow your car to run with less gasoline wasted. Soft tires will cost you money! It’s easy to check tire pressure at any gas station, and this is a tip you can easily take care of yourself. Keep your tires in tip-top condition, and you will save money, and stay safe on the road.

Drive A Fuel-Efficient Vehicle

You must consider the rising cost of fuel when shopping for a new car. Consider a compact model with a v4 engine for maximum value for your gas dollar. There are also hybrids such as the Prius: it is a fairly expensive car, but will pay for itself in terms of saving on fuel expenses. There are more hybrids coming onto the market every day: keep looking for modern, fuel-efficient cars that will reduce your dependence on gasoline.

Educate Yourself

Here are some links to websites that will give you excellent facts about gas consumption, saving money, and the new breed of hybrid vehicles. Take a few minutes to read and learn, and you can dramatically reduce the money you spend on gasoline.

The information in this article is a great start toward much better gas mileage. There are several other great tips on this. 1) Get a reusable K&N air filter for better air flow. 2) "Anticipate" traffic so you do less braking and use less throttle...it takes a heck of a lot less energy to get your car up to speed from a rolling start than from a stop. 3) As soon as the oil pressure in your car stabilizes when you start it, start driving the car gently. A cold engine burns much more fuel than a warm engine. Your engine will warm up much quicker while driving than while sitting. The same is true with cold transmissions and drive gears. 4) Use synthetic fluids in the engine and all other parts of your running gear. Less resistance = better gas mileage. There are lots of sites available online with even more information. Once you get into it, it is like a game and you keep trying for more and more. Great fun and less impact!

The most unnecessary fuel-consuming habit is "heavy foot on the accellerator from a dead stop". This is normally caused by "runninglateitis", or "overallfrustrationitis", or "idontknowanybetteritis", or "idontcareitis", all of which easily changed if a person is really interested in getting the most from their tank of gas. The cost of actually get your car in motion from a dead stop/standstill is the number one reason for poor gas mileage. Think "feather-foot throttle operation" and "smooth, gradual accelleration" and you'll save big bucks in your lifetime of driving, no matter what type auto you may drive/own. We all know that the last part of one's body that learns to drive is the right foot! So its time for our right feet to attend driver's ed.
