The purpose of your resume is to market yourself. You are trying to sell yourself to someone. Imagine being on late night television. You are the item that is being sold. See yourself being sold with eagerness, anticipation, and loud wacky BUY BUY BUY! You need to be as excited about yourself when writing your resume. Your skills and qualifications are only a small portion of your resume.
Research example objectives. Your objective is your job target. Simply state what sort of job you want and where you would like to work. Be specific but not full of rambling statements.
Make it brief. Which is more impressive? Your school experience or you work experience? The answer to this question will be what you choose to list first on your resume. You want your best qualifications up front. Do you get tired and bored after reading a little of something? What if you had to read a little of something over and over again? Don’t you think it makes sense to put your best up front?
Then list the other experience you have. Other possible things to include in your resume are: Summary of skills, achievements, relevant honors, Leadership and volunteer activities, and your interests.
Do not put that you volunteered in the nursing home when you were in middle school unless you are applying for a position similar. Make certain that any of these items you want to add all have to do with your desired position.
The last thing you should have on your resume is your list of references. Do not list your references on your resume!!! You may attach them and write “See attached page” Or “References available upon request” When typing your resume, use your most recent experience (work, school, ect) first. Work your way backwards. If you find you do not have a whole lot of experience, a good idea would be to volunteer somewhere to gain that experience. You could also apply for an internship somewhere. If you are currently working towards a degree, write, “ (Liberal Arts) Degree expected May 2009”
Do not use color paper. Always use white or off white when preparing your resume. Print in black in 12 point Arial or Times Roman. Do not put hobbies on you resume.
Do not put personal information on your resume. Keep it professional. Do not put the word “Resume” anywhere on your resume. Do not include reasons for leaving previous jobs or salary information from previous jobs.
Do not put the name and address of your supervisors from the past. All this information can be provided on the application for employment or/and when asked for. Never give any more information about yourself other than your skills and qualification.
