The first step with any project is get an idea, and start researching where to begin. My ideas came from an ad I got in the mail from a Wal-Mart. We have had this spare room empty for quite some time from my grown daughters, just did not know exactly what we wanted to do. The walls were already a soft lavender so we did not have worry about painting. We have an XL Twin size bed that we wanted to convert into a “day bed” but finding all the bedding for that size was difficult. I just got this huge idea when I saw this ad . . . the comforter on the front of the ad came in the size I needed in an assortment of bright colors. Thus my ideas were now coming to life. I purchased the comforter in a reversible purple, toss pillows in a multi purple, hot pink, and orange bright colors; the sheets are a pastel lilac, and for the body pillow left behind by my daughter I purchased a pink cover. The bed really looked nice when complete. As a fabulous finishing touch I was able to find an area rug with the same design and colors as the throw pillows. I just wanted to mention that this room may appear more on the feminine side but it is all in the colors. You could also go with some darker colors, blues and burgundy for example to be a little more on the masculine side.
Now that I got my focal point complete–the bed–I proceeded to look into what other accessories I wanted for my room. I purchased a charming hot pink parsons table, a lime green wall clock and a purple framed wall mirror. I already have a cute orange desk lamp to put on the table. It was so much fun to choose all these different colors in one room, and it looks really nice . . . and bright. If you wanted, you could add a shelf in another color, a hamper and a garbage can.
If you are a crafter or a do-it-yourself type person, you can not only use your own imagination but possibly things hanging around your home to complete the wall décor in your new special room. I did purchase 3 inexpensive black formatting picture frames for my craft idea, got some scrap booking scissors, stencils and colored stock paper from my daughter. The rest of my artwork “décor” I happened to find in my craft room. I cut out a bunch of shapes for the picture frames, placing first a background of colored paper to which I glued the shapes to before framing them. One of the frames was all hearts; the others were of various shapes, decorated with craft paints and stickers. I had a wooden cut out heart that I backed with bright orange paper and hot glued two butterflies. This grouping of “art work” went on one wall behind the bed. On the other wall I had two grapevine wreaths decorated with greens, tiny flowers and butterflies, placed on either side of the mirror. Over to the upper left on this wall is the clock, with some tiny hearts hot glued at random to the wall as my finishing touch. The whole room was a lot of fun to do and very inexpensive. On one other wall, not pictured here, is a computer desk & chair so there are more endless possibilities if you happen to have a student at home.
Just use your imagination and be very creative and your thoughts will keep pouring out. Good luck.
