Halloween is a fantastic time to get all of the adults together for a party. I found after having a child that Halloween was for “the kids”. Costumes, candy, homemade donuts, bobbing for apples, and scary decorations. About four years ago my husband and I started having Halloween parties for adults. I was truly surprised to see all of our friends dressed up! They loved it! The first couple of years we didn’t spend much money at all. A few decorations, liquor, plastic cups–good to go.
Costumes are the ultimate way to show your “other” side. Whether spooky, sexy, creepy, or silly, every costume is a hit. When picking out a costume it’s a good idea to start early. Adult parties are exciting to dress up for because you don’t need to worry so much about the weather and almost nothing is out of bounds. Remember if kids are going to be there try to keep it G rated. A lot of costumes are already sold out by mid October, so shop early! Some people just can’t grasp the idea of dressing up. For these gals or fellas I suggest a simple mask to show up in and by the time everyone has had a few Crawly Jell-O Shots (put a gummy worm in each shot glass), no one will be the wiser. Not a mask person? Face paint is fun! Zombies are a great way to wear just what you wear everyday but with a little flair. Remember, don’t be discouraged if not everyone dresses up for your party. It took a few years for some of our friends to feel comfortable dressing up. But hey, it’s a party. Everyone is invited.
If Halloween falls on a weekday, not to worry, most adults have children and enjoy spending the creepy crawly holiday with them anyway. Be sure to plan your party the weekend before Halloween. That way your friends can come to your party, and still get to see their little witches and cowboys dressed up on the big day. Plus, you’ll have a great costume to wear on that day too! Remember to invite way more people then you expect to show. First rule of party planning: OVER-INVITE. That way you are sure to have a fantastic party with a good amount of people. Don’t forget to stress RSVP–the last thing you want is to run out of snacks or drinks because you didn’t prepare for enough people.
Decorations are a great way to set the mood of the evening. Everything from spider webs to fog machines and fake blood to sound effects. Nearly everything you may want to decorate with is reusable so you are sure to have wonderful decorations for next year too (also useful for older kids, who may have party plans of their own)! These days invitations are not always necessary, either. With the days of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Blogs all you need to do is log on and spread the word. So get your party mood into high gear, check out some fabulous costumes and start planning!
