The average amount of graduate debt for medical students comes around $140,000 annually. And this amount does not include room and boarding and book expenses. The amount just becomes double in case the student decides to go to a private medical school. Among other medical scholarships available out there, the American Medical Association (AMA) also provides free money for college in the form of medical students scholarship.

Looking at the tough competition, medical students find it really an unconquerable feat to find free money for college. Students are required to do a lot of research and check out the details to be eligible to apply for a specific medical scholarship program. However, students who have displayed extraordinary leadership skills in the community or those who have obtained excellent academic grades can always find free scholarship money for their medical education expenses. Every specific medical scholarship for students has its own motive, eligibility and selection criteria. The American Medical Association (AMA) defines its mission behind providing free scholarship money to medical students as "to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health".

Whether or not you are not selected for the AMA scholarship program depends on your leadership qualities, integrity and ethical behavior. AMA further states that it understands the financial situation of medical students. To ease the financial burden on students of medical science, the American Medical Association offers students a number of scholarship programs. Given below are two AMA scholarships for medical students who aspire to establish their career as doctors. Minorities Student Scholarships to Pay for Medical School The American Medical Association (AMA) awards a total of 12 minorities scholarships for medical students, called the Minority Scholars Award. According to the AMA, a mere 7 of the total numbers of American doctors belong to minority groups or communities including the African American, the Hispanic, the American Indian etc. The AMA awards this scholarship to medical students on the basis of their academic excellence, extraordinary leadership skills and active involvement in community service. The candidates nomination is done by the medical school that the student goes to. The scholarship amount awarded is $10,000 per student. Scholarship Money for Third Year Medical College Students Students who are in current third year of their medical study and are about to enter the fourth yea are eligible to receive the medical scholarship. Referred to as the Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarships, the program offers $10,000 as free money to students. The candidates nomination is sent by the medical school itself. Medical colleges can send scholarship nominations in three categories including journalism, teaching/ mentoring and general category. The scholarship money is provided to medical students who have been actively involved in community services, displayed academic excellence and extraordinary leadership skills. There are a number of other medical scholarships available for students. Though AMA scholarships can be competitive, deserving candidates can always apply and win the free scholarship money awarded every year. With some online scholarship research and printed scholarship literature research students can be able to find more medical scholarships to maintain their college tuition, books and other education related expenses.
