Dollar Stores - An Overlooked Bargain

How to 'Smart Cookie' Your Way Back to Financial Control - One Bite at a Time

Are you a Frugal Frannie or a Discount Diva? You know exactly when to hit the stores and how. You come armed with your store card and one day coupons. Not only do you have your coupon, you have read the fine print and know where to apply it. You know the difference between a good cheap product and one that is just well, cheap. You shop off season for items you know you will need later such as coats and sweaters. Right now you are probably patting yourself on the back for a job well done.

Not so fast though. There is one place that can provide almost all of the necessary household items you buy on sale at the local grocer. Your neighborhood Dollar Tree. That’s right, it is one of the best dollar store chains around. Unlike most dollar stores which keep to cheap plastic glasses and cheaper knick knacks, Dollar Tree carries real glasses. Glasses that can come in different colors and types, long stemmed color tipped glasses; Coke glasses in different styles and even martini glasses. Target is currently advertising a price of $26.99-$44.99 for a set of 6 red goblets. If you are in the market of setting up house and are not trying to break the bank Dollar Tree is a wonderful place to start.

We have all seen the lovely set ups advertised by Target or Crate and Barrel.  Lovely wreaths with bows and bulbs, nice place settings with tiered dishes and matching table cloths and napkins, eye catching displays of silk flowers and hanging vines. Crate and Barrel is currently advertising a price of over $50 for a floral door wreath and $14.95 for a set of three Mitsumata branches. These things look lovely, as they should, but should you pay the prices they are asking for them? No, you can buy similar items at the dollar store, especially because most would only hang the red wreath during holidays. It would be a waste of money if the item were to be damaged during storage.

Now while I agree that when it comes to household cleaners, some things you just need to buy; what about the other things? Such as gloves or sponges, brooms and dustpans, these things can be purchased at the dollar store. Why spend $2-$3 dollars for a broom, which is the same type and quality that you would find at a Dollar Tree? It just doesn’t make good sense. Have a potpourri dish? You can find a variety of fragrances available to refresh the scent. As well as different fragrances that work very well as room fresheners.

For the most part there is no reason to purchase items you can get for less, for more. Take a look around at the items you buy on a regular basis or even for just special occasions. Chance are those items could have been purchased at Dollar Tree. If you do not have one near you, visit them online and see for yourself what they have to offer. Besides, no one will know where you purchased it, unless you tell them. Happy bargain hunting.
