Anger/stress is one of those nasty feelings that can make you do or say terrible things. This feeling can cause such strife in relationships that you may not talk to family members/friends for a long time or ever again. Everyone gets angry it’s a natural emotion. How we deal with this overwhelming feeling is what counts.
I remember as a teenager I had a boyfriend and all he cared about what his precious jeep. We had a date and he broke it because he got some new seats for his jeep and he wanted to install them. I was so furious I went to his house and the seat was outside waiting for him to install but he wasn’t there. The terrible thoughts that went through my head, burn it, take it with me, the seat was so heavy it was all I could do to move it. Well I saw a tool laying on the ground and I slashed the seat into twenty or so tares. Now I thought oh crap he’s going to kill me. What do I do with this thing. I tried to drag it into the woods but didn’t have alot of luck with that. See this is not how to act out on anger. I felt like a real ass and now realized I have to tell him what I did. That sucked! He forgave me and life went on but man did I feel like an idiot.
Anger can be powerful and managing it can be challenging. You need to have self control and self awareness. These can take a while to develope. Try to notice what your feeling and thinking and why. Don’t act out and now you regret the outcome. Stressful situations have a way of sticking with us. Poorly managed anger can have damaging effects to ones life and health. Women find a greater connection between anger and depression while men find anger associated with health problems.
Here are some ways I’ve found to help reduce my anger and or stress. Meditation, prayer whatever you want to call it. This slows your heart rate and can help with breathing letting more air flow through your lungs giving more oxygen to your brain. Not to mention getting some guidance from our Lord never hurts. I like to listen to music. Contrary to what I’ve learned about relaxtion and music I like hip hop or rock. Although you’ll read in most places that soothing music, sounds of the outside or soft music is best. See what your body responds to. Eating healthy and exercising has helped me loose quite a bit of weight and also make me feel better. Fresh fruits and vegetables are great. I’ve also enjoyed protein shakes. I make these myself with lowfat milk fresh fruit and flavored protein powder. Laughing always makes us feel better watch a funny movie or put yourself in the presence of comical people.
There’s always drugs if all else fails. I do mean drugs prescribed by a doctor. Sometimes you just need that quick boost to help get you started with your new way of thinking and behaving. Don’t feel like a failure if you try these suggestions but still need meds. I feel like what ever it takes to get you on a healthy and happy lifestyle more power to you.
