Have you ever heard someone say, “It’s like riding a bike, you never forget how.” It’s true, however I did feel a bit shaky getting on a bike for the first time in probably 10 years.
With the economy in the state it is in and the fact that while I do still have a job, due to forced furlough days, I’m making less and should find ways to save like riding my bike to work.
Also, with the extra pounds I’m not so thrilled about the bike couldn’t hurt there either. So, I found myself a used bike and have started peddling. I love it. It has only been a month but so far so good.
Here are some of the many benefits of riding a bike to work. The first are specific to my situation, but anyone can turn those into their own specifics.
1. It is a great wake me up! I get to work and although I need to freshen up, I really don’t need coffee!
2. I ride about 6 ½ miles each way. So I’m burning over 1000 calories!
3. I’m saving on gas!
4. I’m saving on parking, which can be $5/day!
Next, is a more comprehensive list that is more inclusive of benefits everyone would gain from biking it to work. Obviously it’s not an option for everyone, but it is an option for a lot more people then those who actually consider it.
1. Bikes don’t usually require a loan so if you can’t get a car, you can probably get a bike.
2. Biking saves money on gas, oil, parking, and general car upkeep.
3. It’s great exercise.
4. It can be a great stress reliever. (For me on the way to work I get to let everything go from home and on the way home it’s easier to leave the work far behind at work)
5. It is low impact on your body. (I’m a runner, who recently banged my knee and haven’t run in a couple months, biking is a great alternative to keep me moving)
6. When there’s traffic problems it’s much easier to keep going. Traffic jams don’t effect my getting to work on time.
7. Bike riding reduces air pollution, which is great as I am also trying to live more green!
8. Bike riding reduces water pollution, bikes don’t drip brake fluid, gas or oil.
9. It’s easy to change your route if needed and sometimes can be fun to change your route.
So it’s time to think about it. Is biking to work an option for you? If you’re within 15 miles of work, I think it could be. If it’s a longer distance you may have some more debating to do with yourself. Get your helmet and comfy clothes, it’s time to saddle.
