Beware: Not All Polished Concrete Floors Are Created Equally

Polished Concrete Floors, a Primer on Polishing Concrete
Natural vs. glazed vs. polished porcelain tile for floors: Pros and cons of each...

Todays topic is on a service that becomes a finished product. While on my visit to Arkansas, where I lived for 3 years, not only did I work as a "Caterer" but I also worked as "Regional Director of Sales" for "Innovative Concrete Systems". "ICS", is considered to be the Best of the Best in what they do, "Diamond Polished Concrete". While "ICS" has proven to be Top Notch in the field of flooring they offer many services dealing with the Building Industry.  Chris & Kim Carroll, owners of this company have made a reputation in the industry  of "Diamond Polished Concrete Flooring" unsurpassed and envied by competitors nationwide. While others say they offer competitive products and services I have seen their work, and it is NOT anything like what "ICS" offers in the "D3 Patented Retro Plate" process they offer exclusively from their office located in Little Rock AR..

As I had no idea what a floor of this this type was or how it became, I needed to learn the process from the ground up. I was so eager to learn about this product I started out working in the shop doing the process myself on the floor as a test patch. I can tell you this is a time consuming and delicate process to achieve the desired results. Only a professional should take on such a daunting task. This is never a DIY project as the equipment needed is very difficult to operate by persons not trained to do so! The grinding process is best achieved when useing Diamonds, and there are many types you must be educated in the process to get professional results. Concrete was always something I just took for granted. Never again after Kim took me around to see the work they had done in Hospitals, Airport’s, Warehouse’s, School’s, Restaurant’s, Retail Store’s, and some of the Finest Homes I have ever seen! Diamond polished floors are not only Beautiful but Very Affordable, in a 10 year Life Cycle Cost Comparison, "The D3 System" treated concrete has the lowest per square foot Life Cycle Cost of any Floor Covering or Coating!

I can tell you, if you see the finished product you will be as impressed as I was. I knew from the moment Kim showed me how versitle the flooring was, and how durable it was, combined with the cost, and the beauty of the finished product, this was the job for me! After all if I could just get people to see the product it would sell it self.  The benefits if this flooring are endless, but here I will list just a few reasons you should use the Pattented "D3 System" offered exclusively by "ICS" to get the results you desire:

  1. Abrasion Resistance: Up to 400% greater
  2. Impact Strength: Up to 21% greater
  3. Light Reflectivity: Up to30% greater
  4. Lowest 10 year Life Cycle Cost
  5. Virtually Maintenance Free- only dust mop and water with a neutral cleaner
  6. No adverse reaction to ultraviolet light or water spray
  7. Eliminates moisture vapor failures related to floor coverings
  8. Wlii not support combustion…Eliminates smoke or toxic fumes
  9. Qualifies for inclusion on Silver, Gold, and Platinum LEED
  10. Eliminates concrete dusting
  11. Retro Plate Patented System

This type floor is suggested for Restaurants* Kitchens* Retail* Schools* Car Dealerships* Vet Clinics* Hospitals* Convention Centers* Medical Clinics* Grocery Stores* Churches* Warehouses* Doctor Offices* Garages* Manufacturing* Hangers* Homes* and the list goes on! Do Not Be Fooled! Not all companys provide the same quality of work. Some will tell you they offer a compairable product. I suggest you do some research on the company and the process they use before being a victim of these companies.

About 7 months ago, I was invited to a friends home here in Dallas, he wanted me to see his Polished Concrete Floors in his new home. He was so proud of them, and I was almost ready to cry as I looked at what he had paid for. It was a disaster! These were not Polished Concrete Floors! The process was improperly done and they had talked him into a Dye not an Acid coloring which for his specific situation was the wrong chioce, and had applied a top coating I am sure was a mop on wax. The Movers had Scratched it Badly when arranging the furnishings. Just so you know a real "Diamond Polished Floor" is impossible to scratch! I have seen Airplanes, Cars, Fork Lifts, Wooden Palets with Thousands of pounds of product on them be skid across the floors and never a mark that couldn’t be wiped away with water! Now in the 7th month of living in his new home he hates the floors! and with good reason! I am going to redo what should have been done RIGHT in the first place! He will end up with a floor he will be proud of and I wil end up with a satisfied customer, and since he entertains often, prospective new clients will see the product and I am GAURENTEED more buisness will come my way!

As a choice for Restaurants front of the house, or in the Kitchen this flooring is unsurpassed as the best choice in todays market! Polished Concrete floors, offer exceptional results for today’s commercial kitchens . They are virtuly maintenance free, never need to be waxed, repel water and grease, do not scratch or chip when moving equipment, are considered a "GREEN" product ,and Qualify for all LEED projects. When considering new construction or a rennovation of a commercial kitchen I highly recommend the "D3 Retro Plate System" offered exclusively by "ICS" in Little Rock , Arkansas. If you are considering a Restaurant Flooring I suggest you go to the "ICS" website and see how this can be the most cost effective and economic choice for you to choose. The company and its staff are professional, and get the job done right the first time!

Comments & Questions

We are really starting to see people realize the benefits of not having a coating in the midwest. Recently we have looked at some restaurants that didn't want a coating in their kitchen. Granted polished concrete can take the chemicals, but what about slip resistance...most of these facilities either put down an epoxy with a broadcast or a slip resistance tile. How could polished concrete work in this mix.

Chad, as a reply to your question I suggest that the polished concrete flooring is just as slip resistant as any tile or other flooring option. Commercial Kitchen floors are always a hazard if not kept clean, any information you require on standards regarding slip resistance may be found on the website listed in the "factoidz". I should add that mats are common practice in most commercial kitchens. The benefit of the polished concrete is its ability to maintain a clean surface as it repels oil and water. It also is more cost effective, as the topical coatings need to be replaced many times over throughout the life cycle of the floor. If you have any further questions or need more information on the "D3"process offered by ICS please call Kim at the Little Rock office she will be more than happy to assist you in your needs, and/ or answer any questions you may have.
