Gazebos, like patios, have now become a popular outdoor decoration in many gardens. Gazebos have an old history and were first used by the Egyptians as free standing structures. The exact function of the gazebos in the early centuries is not known but it is widely believed that they were most likely used as temples or place of worship.

Today, gazebos do not have a spiritual connotation but are a place where one can come to relax and forget about the troubles of yesterday. Gazebos have gained a lot of popularity in American homes in the last 40 years. Today, it has become the favorite place to retreat when one is away from work. Gazebos can be used for a variety of functions and are suitable for both children and adults. The modern day gazebos are elegant. The majority of them add significantly to the landscape and can add to the financial value of the home.

Gazebos can be designed in any style and fashion. The choice is strictly personal. There are a lot of materials from which one can build a gazebo. Gazebos can be built by many professionals but there as just as many “Do it yourself Kits” available for the handy man who can install a decent gazebo in no time. There are also portable gazebos now available. These come with a folding tent and are easy to set up. Many people use these portable gazebos to go to the beach and use them to set up a barbecue or a picnic.

Wooden gazebos continue to be favorites among many DIY enthusiasts. Redwood and cedar gazebos can be very attractive. Many people now use gazebos as a covering for an outdoor spas or a hot tub. The gazebo can also be covered with glass, wood, plexi glass, aluminum, piece of fabric, bamboo shoots or be left open at the sides. For those who can afford marble gazebos can make a garden look fabulous. One thing to remember is that all gazebos require some degree of maintenance, especially if it is made from wood.

Gazebos add a certain mystery and excitement to a home and thus its location is important. Gazebos should always be placed at the termination point of  path or near the waters edge.

Gazebos come in a variety of shapes ranging from oval, rectangular or octagonal. One can add windows, doors, electricity and even pump water in to the structure.  One can even insulate them against the cold. Some gazebos can be used all year around if they have been furnished well. Over time the gazebo can become another summer retreat or a winter cabin. To make the gazebo attractive at night, add some lights, candles or lanterns. Lights bring a certain charm to the garden and the gazebo. It entices romance.

Gazebos are frequently used for many events like wedding anniversaries, birthday celebrations, wine party or simply a place to relax.

To make the gazebos look even better, many people plant flowers around it. A gazebo in the center of the garden or near the pool always looks neat and enticing.

A gazebo provides an escape from the hassle of everyday life and affords solitude and quiet. Once you build one, you will experience a sense of enjoyment from your garden which is unrivaled by any vacation.
