Butterflies using Watercolour Techniques

This series allows me to play with several watercolour techniques. Firstly, when drawing out the insects, the trick is to always draw each bit alternatively in order to try and mirror the wings. You could trace one side and then mirror it over, but it will test your observational skills to work from freehand! The first picture and subsequent show masking fluid painted and removed from the flowers. A wet into wet out of focus background was then applied.

The masking fluid was then removed and the flowers completed. Working from lights to darks, the butterflies were created using wet in wet, blending, washes and wet on dry.
