Do you snore? You might not know it if you do, unless your partner tells you. Does your partner keep you from sleeping due to snoring? Do you wish there were a snoring cure? When I was first married I thought I would go crazy from lack of sleep due to my husband’s snoring. Nothing can be much worse than being sleep deprived, because it can cause you to fall asleep when you need to be awake. My mom slept in another bedroom for almost as long as I can remember because my dad kept her up snoring.
Before seeking medical care for snoring, it might help to try a few simple snoring remedies first. If you snore, you might be lying flat on your back. Try to sleep on your sides at night, and when you do lie on your back try to keep your head elevated. You may find your snoring cure by making lifestyle changes. Many people who snore overeat, drink alcohol, smoke and don’t exercise enough. If you smoke, quit. If you drink alcohol, try not to drink any near bedtime. Eat smaller meals more often if you need to, because overfilling the stomach with food and then going to bed may be contributing to your snoring.
If changing position and refraining from drinking alcohol has not helped your snoring there may be an underlying medical problem that is causing you to snore. Many people who are overweight tend to snore. A simple or maybe not so simple remedy to stop snoring in this situation is to lose weight. I noticed that my daughter never started snoring until after she gained about 60 pounds. Her snoring is so disruptive to her husband she is considering surgery as a snoring cure.
Snoring is caused by the soft tissue in the nasal and throat areas are loose and vibrate. Sometimes the tongue falls back to partially blocks the flow of air out of the mouth during snoring. If you sleep with a partner, you can ask your partner to nudge you enough to wake up and turn on your side. Turning on your side you may stop the soft tissues in your nasal and throat passages from vibrating, which will thereby stop you from snoring.
Many people who snore also have a condition known as sleep apnea. Snoring does not cause you to have sleep apnea, but snoring is a symptom of the disorder. With sleep apnea you stop breathing for a few seconds. There are 3 types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, mixed sleep apnea, and central sleep apnea. Without going into detail about each of the types of sleep apnea, the bottom line is that you stop breathing many times a night. If it were not for your brain rousing you from sleep you would suffocate in your sleep.
Since sleep apnea is a potentially deadly condition, it is important to find out why you snore. Do you snore because you have sleep apnea, or is there some other reason that you snore? If you see a physician for snoring, your doctor may suggest you go to a clinic and have a sleep study. It is important to diagnose sleep apnea because it can cause high blood pressure, memory problems, and heart problems. At the very least sleep apnea often causes a sleep deficit. All too often people with sleep apnea go undiagnosed for years. Some have even caused automobile accidents by going to sleep just for a microsecond.
In conclusion, if you snore, or your partner snores, you should see your doctor about it if snoring continues after trying a few simple remedies. Finding out the primary cause of snoring would be a step in the right direction, rather than moving to another room to avoid the agony of sleepless nights. If your doctor has concluded that your snoring is not due to any underlying health issue, you may find relief by wearing an appliance to hold your tongue from sliding to the back of your throat. You can get an appliance from your dentist, and you can also find some appliances online. There are also devices that you would strap on and wear on your back to make it uncomfortable to sleep in a supine position. If you snore, and you cannot stop snoring, your physician may be able to help.
