Your wedding officiant: How to select the right one and what you should expect

How to plan and prepare for your first dance at your wedding

I have been doing custom wedding ceremonies for almost ten years.  It has been an amazing experience as I consider every service an honor and a privilege.  Truly, the ceremony is the most important part of the wedding and not only sets the stage for the following reception, but for the life of the couple.  How does a couple successfully choose an officiant?

The first thing they need to know is what type of service do they want?  An officiant should be accommodate the couple.  Many officiants tell the client what he or she does or will do.  Since it is the couple getting married, the officiant should desire to express the couple’s love for each other to their family and friends the way the couple wants it said.

The second thing is one that comes from the heart rather than logic.  Couples must feel the connection with the person who is going to officiate one of the most important life experiences.  How connected do they feel to this person?

The third thing is will the fee fit the couple’s finances.  I basically let the couple decide the amount that works for them.  Each couple has a different budget and my philosophy is that I do not want to refuse a couple because of money.

Next, how does the officiant sound?  Does he or she have a pleasant voice?  This is important as he or she will ultimately be speaking words that represent your feelings on your wedding day.

For me, when I began doing weddings I knew each would be customized to fit the couple.  My goal is simply to be the conduit that delivers the message the couple wants delivered.  I am willing to write the service.  I am willing to have a little input from the couple or have the couple write the entire service.  My desire is to put the wishes of the couple into words and actions.

Choosing a wedding officiant is an important task.  It is more important than most couples realize.  Call the officiant.  Meet with them.  Pose the difficult questions.  If you want more information you can check out all the wedding websites online.  I also have a Website.  It is www.marlenbricker.com.  On it you will find many things that can assist you in finding the perfect officiant for one of the most important days in your life.

Ceremonies end……..memories linger.

Excellent advice on the ideal relationship a couple should be able to develop with their prospective wedding officiant! Many officiants will push their own agenda for ceremony content and procedure, or in requiring unwanted (and often unqualified) "counseling sessions" for couples--instead of providing their services for this happy occasion out of such a good-natured willingness to help enable the couple to realize their own vision of the ceremony that is the very heart of the celebration.

Thank you for your input. It is truly how I feel. I am simply the conduit through which the couple express. Where are you located?
