BleachBit is a Linux Ubuntu desktop application designed to delete un-wanted files such as cookies, cache, logs, Internet history, temporary files, and broken shortcuts to get rid of junk, free up valuable hard drive space and secure your privacy. This tutorial will show you how to install and use BleachBit to delete unnecessary files from your Ubuntu 9.04 desktop.

1. You can install BleachBit from the Ubuntu 9.04 repositories by using the Synaptic Package Manager. To do this, click the System button located near the top of the window. After that, click Administration and the System Package Manager in the dropdown window that opens. Type in a password to continue.

2. You can now use the quick search tool to search for BleachBit. Once you have found it, click the checkbox found on the left of the package. Click Mark for Installation to select and install it. You may need to install additional packages. If this is necessary, click on Mark to install to install the dependencies.

3. Click Apply to begin the installation. You will need to click Apply again to confirm your selection.

4. The packages are then being downloaded and installed. Click Close to leave the Synaptic Package Manager.

5. You are now ready to use BleachBit. You can launch the program by clicking the Applications button located at the top of the screen. After that, click System Tools and then BleachBit in the dropdown menu that appears. After starting BleachBit for the first time, you will be presented with a Preferences window. You can now change BleachBit’s configuration. You can choose what items you want to delete. For example, you can delete Firefox’s cache, your Internet history, cookies, localizations, logs, temporary files, and broken shortcuts. By looking at the main window, you can see a summary of what you can delete. Simply select the specific items to delete. After you have made your choices, click the Delete button.

6. Confirm your choices by clicking the Delete button for a second time.

7. BleachBit will then delete the items you have selected. You can see the files being deleted in the main window. You can also see how much disk space the items are occupying. You can now use BleachBit to delete unnecessary files on your Ubuntu 9.04 desktop. Using this program on a regular basis will help you conserve hard drive space on your computer.
