I will be the first to admit that the thought of shopping at Goodwill made me cringe. I had only known of Goodwill as the place where my childhood clothes went to die. The moment I walked into a Goodwill store last year, I longed for my aviators and a baseball cap; worried that people would see me and judge. But once I saw the fashion steals that lay ahead I was hooked! Now I proudly tell others about my Goodwill excursions.
Organization
The clothes at Goodwill are organized by color and style, rather than size. I like the fact that I can go directly to the sections with my favorite colors and start browsing. It’s like a fashion treasure hunt where great brands like Express, Limited, GAP, BeBe and Old Navy are hidden waiting for you to find them.
Monthly Calendar
Goodwill stores have a monthly calendar that they put out with deals and events listed on almost every day. Each item in Goodwill has a colored price tag and on certain days of the month you can get 50% off items tagged with that color. I have been able to score dress pants from The Limited for $4 with the help of the monthly calendar. You can pick up a calendar at the store.
New Clothes at Goodwill?
Yes it’s true! There are many items within Goodwill that are brand new and still have the tags on them. Stores like TJ Maxx and Target donate clearance items to Goodwill and shoppers can be lucky enough to find an item in a variety of sizes and colors. I managed to get a brand new cocktail dress for $6 that was originally $80 at a department store; its entire markdown history was displayed on the tags.
Goodwill should no longer be viewed as a place to go when you need a costume or an ugly sweater, instead think of it as a cave of fashion wonders.
