If you have or are planning to install steel roofing, you will need to find a good way to obtain roof ventilation. Installing steel roofing vents is a very similar process to installing any sort of vent, but there are some ways that you can streamline the process to make it a little easier and place the vents where they will work the best.

Tip 1: Plan Ahead

If you haven’t built your steel roof yet, look into types of vents you would like to install before ever purchasing the roof. Many roofing companies are able to perform both tasks. If you have the roof constructed and the vents installed at the same time, you may be able to save a good deal of money.

Tip 2: Look Around at Other Vents

To decide what type of vents will work best in your home, look at other structures in your area. See what they have used for  roofing ventilation, whether they are using the round spinners or a simple slated vent. If you see many people with the same variety, it may be a sign that those specific vents work best in your area. Another option is to talk to your contractors and see what they think would be best for your home.

Tip 3: Prepare and Measure Your Roof Area

Carefully get on top of your roof and decide where you are going to place your vents. Before this you should know the shape and size of your vents, and you can draw with chalk where the vents should go. This will help you when you or crews need to cut out areas for your vents. You will know that they are spaced evenly and will give your home the venting it needs.

Tip 4: Spend a Little More for Good Vents

Some vents can be noisy or not work properly once they are installed. If you have a steel roof, you know that quality is important, and spending a little extra on your roofing vents now may save you money in repairs or replacements in the future.

Tip 5: Use Tar to Create Insulation

After you have cut a hole into your metal roof and you are planning on installing the vent, align the edges of the hole with tar. This is fairly easy to do and it will create a tight and waterproof seal between the roof and the vent. It will also work as a glue to hold the two together.

Also add a second layer of tar after you have installed the vent. This will make sure that there are no empty spaces that could cause water damage or insect infestation.

Tip 6: Follow Installation Instructions Carefully

The best thing you can do to install your vents correctly and safely is by following the instructions that came with your vents. Find every item in the kit and know how to identify it. Following manufacturer’s instructions will save you hours of repair time in the future.

Whenever you are working on your home, it is important to stay safe and follow every safety precaution. Make sure to wear durable, slip-resistant material and watch your step.
