Organizing your garage can be a hassle and at time frustrating. Think about it, once you put your car(s) into your garage, you’re not left with much space. To make things a bit easier for yourself, try to keep your garage as organized as possible at all times. This will make your life much easier- trust me.
Here’s a helpful guide to get your garage clean and organized.
The garage I have is fairly small, but thankfully we have a little area, a step above the ground, where we can store some items on it. So if you have one of those, take advantage of it.
Target sells those large rubber storage bins that come in all different shapes and colors. They’re pretty cheap and you can fit a lot of stuff in it. I highly recommend picking some of those up to store your tools, decorations; those take up a lot of space and if you don’t have an attic, the bins work perfectly, my mom has five storage bins full of Christmas decorations.
If you have a ton of stuff try and buy different colors and sizes, it’ll help you remember what items are in which container. What’s great about the containers is they last even if you get water in your garage, unlike boxes, which get ruined if rain gets in there.
In my garage my mom and I both park our cars in there. She has a large Impala and I have a little Aveo. Since my mom decided to use that stoop area for the extra flooring that came with the townhouse plus all our folding chairs, we lost a lot of our garage space. Since we have a townhouse, we also had to stick our garbage bins and that large recycle bin in the garage as well taking up even more space.
What we did was put the garbage and recycle bins where my mom parks her car, on the left size. Since the refrigerator is on the other side it was better for me to park on that size since my car is a lot smaller, which means all the recycle bins are all on the right side next to me car.
Since neither of us knows how to install shelving in the garage, I imagine it’s harder than putting in shelving on a wall in a house; we opted for the Rubbermaid bins. If you are a handy person, or have the money to do it, get shelves put in on the walls. That way you can put all your items in boxes and put them on the shelves, leaving nothing on the floor other than your car(s) and garbage bins.
Like I mentioned in my previous article on kitchen organization, go through your garage and toss out, or donate, anything that you just don’t need. It’ll just take up space in an already small area.
You want the space in your garage for your cars, because if you’re in an area where it snows- I’m in Illinois- you’re not going to want to leave your car on the driveway in the winter. Trust me, it’s not good.
When it comes to garages, you’re not given a whole lot of space, but you just have to work with what you’ve got. Don’t fret too much now, you’ll get your garage uncluttered and organized in no time. If not, well, that’s what I’m here for.
