There is construction going on almost everywhere. There is road construction, bridge construction, and many other types of construction where one must know how to use heavy machinery. If you are looking for work, and you have experience in road construction, many companies need pavers, graders, scrapers and excavators. Sometimes during road construction, an area that has houses and trees either has to be circumnavigated, or the area has to be leveled by excavators. Many two-lane roads have to be changed to four and six lane highways because of urban sprawl into areas that were once quaint little towns.
Anyone who has to drive on a road that is going through construction knows there are many stops and starts along the way. As a traveler, you might not like coming to a stop to allow for construction to take place. Sometimes you have to wait for backhoe loaders to load to get out of the way, or you have to wait for one-way traffic when pavers, graders, scrapers and other construction workers are doing their job in the opposite lane. You may not like waiting for the construction work to take place, but you will enjoy the smooth feel of the new road when the road is finished.
Other large pieces of heavy equipment are compactors. You often see big rollers on a road construction site. Compactors roll over the earth to compact it. There are different types of compactors. Some compactors are meant only to pack down the earth, while other compactor rollers are designed to compact asphalt. The compacting process starts with the stretch of earth that is being formed into a roadway. The road will be shaped and flattened many times during road construction.
Motorists should always obey the reduced speed limit signs that are in plain sight in construction areas. Driving fast puts everyone in jeopardy. Driving fast through an area marked for slow speed can cause loose gravel to be propelled toward the construction workers. Motorists should always remember that the backhoe loaders, cranes and bull dozers are being operated by people who have a job to do. These heavy equipment operators are working as efficiently as they can to do their job as quickly as possible. As a motorist, who has to wait for 15 to 20 minutes, try to stay calm behind the wheel of your car. Getting upset and honking your horn will do nothing to make your wait any shorter.
Sometimes bridges are being overhauled. Traffic may have to be rerouted through a detour while bridges are being constructed or repaired. Traffic may be rerouted slightly to make room for the cranes and other heavy equipment necessary to do the job. Sometimes you are allowed to drive on one lane of a bridge that is being worked on, and sometimes you have to be redirected to take a detour; it all depends on what level of construction is being preformed.
If you have ever worked in construction during the summer, you know it is a very hot job. Rather than getting upset because you have to wait for pavers, graders, scrapers and other heavy machinery to finish their pass, be glad you are within the cool comfort of your vehicle, and not sweltering in the hot sun. When the construction work is finally finished, you will appreciate how easily your vehicle moves over the surface.
