School is out. Kids are excited. Summertime! Then a week or two later, you here the dreaded words, “I’m bored.” Then for the duration of the summer, you are pulling your hair out trying to keep them entertained. What do you do?
Money is a valuable commodity and you really do not want to waste it on Gatti-land every weekend. And the membership to the zoo can only hold their interest so many trips until it becomes old. What do you do?
Kids love to socialize. If your child has friends in the neighborhood, help them get a club started. Show them how to create a name for their club, a motto, It could be a book club, a dance club, and exercise club, and babysitting club; the possibilities are endless. They could make lemonade stands or Kool-Aid stands and raise money for outings. Help them be creative.
What about a neighborhood talent show. All the kids can contribute something. Let them plan and prepare for a week which will keep them busy and then help them create a place to hold their talent show. Invite family and friends and charge a quarter or dollar to see it. Then the kids can split their earnings and have ice cream or something as a celebration.
Obstacle courses are always fun. It takes time to build it and then it occupies their time while they hold contests. This can be done multiple times throughout the summer by using different objects to create the course.
Hold a pen pal event. Have all the kids write a letter to an unknown person and then help them insert the letters into balloons. Fill with helium and let it go. All summer long, everyone will be in suspense wondering if anyone will write them back.
Scavenger hunts are a hit. Give each child a list of common but perhaps hard to find. Then let them be off on their merry way. Whoever finds all the items on their list first wins a prize. Then hold a pizza party to celebrate all their efforts.
Allow the children to decorate their bikes and wagons have then put some batteries into a boombox and let them have their own neighborhood parade.
Provide your children with disposable cameras and scrapbook and let them create a summer memory book that will be with them forever. This is an ongoing thing throughout the entire summer.
Hunt for four leaf clovers.
Let them plant a garden of something that grows fast like tomatoes. They can see it grow all summer
Give them binoculars and a simple bird book. Let them circle all the birds they find.
As you can see…there is a wealth of options that can entertain your children this summer. Now go have fun!
