So you’re ready for a vacation. With winter finally gone and spring in full bloom you are not alone. The problem is, with this economy for most people a vacation is out of the question. Many people are jobless or could become jobless at any moment. How could one think of going on a lavish vacation at a time like this? What if I said that you and your family could go on a lavish vacation and that everyone in the family could have a wonderful time without putting the dent in your wallet that you might at some of the other more traditional vacation hotspots? Well You can. The diamond in the rough that I speak of is none other than the great state of South Carolina. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to be specific.
Myrtle Beach is a destination that many people tend to overlook. Perhaps because of the low key promotional efforts of the state compared to other vacation destinations such as Florida, Las Vegas, Atlantic City or even the entire fleet of cruise lines who vie for the vacationer’s dollar.
Why would anyone come to Myrtle Beach? Weather you are single, have a family, or preparing for retirement, there is something for you in Myrtle Beach at a price you can afford. Maybe the economy has a grip on your wallet. I grew up in a poor household in Massachusetts and yet my parents always provided a beach vacation for us in the summer. After all, the water, sun and sand all come at the same price… Free. In Myrtle Beach you will find about sixty miles of the most pristine beaches in the world and believe it or not much of the parking is free.
Not a beach person. Maybe you enjoy shopping and dining. For upscale shopping and dining the re-development of the former air force base into the Market Common will be sure to satisfy you as well as, Barefoot Landing and Broadway at The Beach.
Maybe the hustle and bustle of shopping malls and touristy atmospheres are not your cup of tea. Maybe you prefer the peace and serenity of a well manicured golf course. If so, there are approximately 125 golf courses on the Grand Strand ranging in price from $35 to $235 per round. No matter how bad you play, playing on one of these beauties is better than working any day.
Where should you stay? Well if you want to stay on the beach during the busy season (May thru August) you will pay more than if you stay off the beach but there are a wide range of accommodations available from Mom and Pop motels to beachfront condos to beach front homes. Looking around on E-bay or Craigslist may net you a wonderful place to stay at a great rate, and of course during the off-season the rates will always be lower.
Perhaps once you visit you may want to consider a more permanent vacation. If so I recommend checking out http://www.thesunnews.com/. Here you will find everything you need to know about Myrtle Beach including job postings as well as real estate etc.
In closing I just want to re-iterate the variety of activities here for everyone. Besides the amusement parks, and beaches, restaurants and shopping malls, and world class golf courses. The Atlanta Braves have a minor league team here by the name of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. There are also two local colleges Horry Georgetown Tech and Coastal Carolina University. Coastal has a top twenty five D-1 Baseball program and a tremendous football team and facility. There is the Myrtle Beach Speedway for the racing enthusiast. There are thousands of acres of land and water if you’re interested in hunting, fishing or boating. If you like dancing Myrtle Beach is the shagging capital of the U.S. There is a church here for nearly every denomination and there’s even a Casino boat that leaves out of nearby Little River. But most of all there is warmth. Not only the warm climate that the southern states are famous for but the warmth of the native people of the Carolinas who wave to you as you pass them on the street, (even though you don’t know them) and invite you into there homes or business with a great big grin and a big “Come on in ya’ll!”
