Down to Business - Ideas for the Business forum

Those that regularly visit this site will know know that faith and family aside, I am passionate about two things - writing and business. In Factoidz, I get to combine the two. I cannot remember how I stumbled upon it, but I am very glad that I did. Since joining, I have been able to learn and develop my writing style as well as hone my research and interpersonal skills. So a huge vote of thanks goes to Mike Q. as well as all my friends on Factoidz, you guys truly rock!

If you do not already know, I have just been made Moderator of the Business section of Factoidz. It is an honour and I hope and pray I do it and its members justice. I desire it to become a place (a forum if you like) where everyone can come and learn, participate in and contribute to - from the budding entrepreneur to the seasoned business professional. I do want it to become a comprehensive library of information, articles and ideas where professionalism meets creativity and where knowledge meets fun. I am working on some ideas at the moment to increase awareness of what Factoidz and in particular the business section has to offer. I think Jerry’s idea for the photography challenge is awesome. To learn more about it, please click here and read it. Pass it along to your friends, family and loved ones, let them all know. Anyway, back to business. Here are some ideas that I have been tossing around. Let me know your feedback and feel free to post ideas on the forum wall. Here I go:

1. Question of the day - this is to encourage discussion and debate within the communities (not just the business one, but others too). I have already posted two. I will perhaps adapt this so that the best answer gets some sort of recognition within Factoidz.

2. Fun Business pitches - this is to help budding entrepreneurs who are looking to start their own business get some practice at pitching their ideas. It is only a bit of fun. Members can vote for the one that they think is the best and the winner will be announced at the end of the week. I am still trying to figure out how it will work out (whether to use videos, or short articles). It will be like an online ‘Dragon’s Den’ style thing. If you want to know what that means, click on this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/dragonsden/.

3. Off the wall - funny stories, real achievements, strange advice and odd happenings in the workplace and business. We want to hear it and what you learnt from it. This again is fun but has a serious element. It will help those (especially those who are unemployed) know what being employed or self employed means. This will be carefully monitored to make sure nothing offensive goes out.

4. The end of week business quiz - this will test your knowledge of current and previous events. It will consist of 7-10 questions to see what people know. Answers will be posted on Monday. This again is for a little light hearted fun but adds to the reader and writer’s knowledge.

So there you have it. There are just some of the things that I am putting out there for you to comment on. Perhaps I should open the vote and see what the most popular are and implement them. I will be speaking to Mike about the viability of some of the ideas. In the meantime, I would like to know what YOU want to see so feel free to post them either at the end of this article or in the business section of Factoidz which can be found at http://factoidz.com/experts-in/business/. I hope that this inspires you all…

Take care and God Bless readers…

I would love to see more personal articles, chicken soup series and cup of comfort series are all based on personal articles and they are great series

Thank you for your idea. So maybe something like Coffee Break (idea number 3 is the closest thing to this idea) where people can swap stories about their achievements, their problems, their stories, etc which show the personal side of starting a business or being in business. You are so right, there are a lot more to being in business than profit margins and marketing plans, people's lives are involved. Thank you again.

Congratulations on getting the moderator position for the Business Channel. It's my opinion from following you closely that you have the knowledge and drive to make a great moderator. I think that your idea for a weekly business quiz is a great idea. Besides my photo assignment/challenges, I thinking of opening up a best answer forum thread similar to what they do on Yahoo Answer but in my case I would post a question at the beginning of the week and then the following week the community would vote to determine which answer was most useful to them. You might want to consider doing something similar for your Business Channel.

Thank you so much Jerry. I really appreciate your votes, support and kind comments and feedback. I am going to wait another few days to see what other people think and then implement them next week. I think your best answer idea is an excellent idea. Huge congrats to you on becoming Moderator for Photography, your articles are awesome, interesting and informative. I cannot wait will see what happens with your photography challenge, what a fab idea! You are an expert on so many things, what made you choose Photography?

Mike had first offered me the Home Improvements Channel but I asked for the Photography Channel because I love photography. I love doing it. I love writing about it. I love helping new photographers develop their skills. Photography has been my passion ever since my aunt gave me a Kodak Brownie Box Camera when I was nine years old. I think I was twelve years old when my uncle set me up with a darkroom and I started processing my own film and printing my own pictures. Over the years I have used just about every type of camera made, finally settling on Nikon cameras as my main camera of choice. I would have done the Home Improvements Channel if that's what Mike wanted but I'm much happier doing the Photography Channel. I actually have a freelance photography business called "Have Camera Will Travel." I came up with that name from an old TV Western series called "Have Gun Will Travel."

That is such an awesome story. The passion definitely shows in your articles. Keep up the good work Jerry. I think that it would be great for all the channels to work together. If we do, Factoidz will rock even more than it already does now!

Good morning Ngozi. I think that all channel moderators should work together as a team but whether we can get all the various channels interrelated some how remains to be seen. I mean that I don't see how we could relate mu channel with one on spirituality or psychic phenomenon. That's not to be interpreted to say that I wouldn't welcome anyone to link something on their channel with mine if there is a genuine relationship and as long as it promotes photography in a positive manner. Factoidz rocks because we have all worked together even before moderators. It's one of a very few sites on the Internet where the writers cooperated for the betterment of the site.

Jerry, I think you are right. In theory, we can work together but in reality in some areas it may not be possible. I mean there are those that are closely linked like Business and finance. I mean I saw an article on setting up a Photography business so I guess its possible. We have all worked together so very well (I love Factoidz, was thinking about just how awesome it is) and the site can only get better because of it. I am thinking there should be an Arts Channel or a Design Channel, that would be a great collaboration with yours, but it seems to be rocking and rollin already...I cannot wait to see what Factoidz comes up with next.

You're right, Ngozi, it won't be possible to tie ever area of Factoidz together. I even pointed that out when I didn't think it would be possible to link thing in the spirituality channel to my channel. It was possible with business and finance because , for many of us photography is also a business and for those photographers who are thinking of turning their hobby into a business.

Thanks Jerry. I think Business can be linked with many areas like Personal finance, Health (things like insurance, sick leave in business etc even travel) but others, it just would not work at all. If you have any ideas re: articles I could write with regards a photography business. I think one has been done already but if you think of others, let me know.

Hi Ngozi. Yes, Benjamin Miller did an article on photography as a start up business. Actually, Ngozi, you might consider doing an article on the tax advantages of starting their business from home. What kind of expenses involved with having a home office, photo studio, and post production facility is tax deductible. Let me know if you want to do something like that?

Hey Jerry. I can do this. I can only do it from a UK perspective not an American one. Would this be ok for you? Let me know.

Jerry Walch  Site Editor - 306 Factoids | + 884 votes

That's great, Ngozi, because you can do it from the perspective that I couldn't and that exactly what I need. I'm sure we have readers in the UK who might like to start a home photography business. Thanks again. Go for it.

Excellent! Do you want me to send it to you so you can look at it before it gets printed. Do you want it all in one factoid or would you like a miniseries of articles?
posted 3 months ago
Jerry Walch  Site Editor - 306 Factoids | + 884 votes

Hi Ngozi. A miniseries would be good. That way you could cover a different aspect in each part. You don't have to send it to me first, just upload each part as you produce it.You know the UK business structures and government regs better than I do so I will go with your judgement. One of the things I would like to see covered is UK copyright and trademark laws as they are applied in a global economy. The miniseries is a great idea because I think there is too much ground to cover to do an effective job in one article. How close you run the parts together, I'll leave that up to your judgement too. Let's do it.

Hey Jerry. That is not a problem at all. Will get on that tonight. So you should have at least one by the weekend. Thank you for the vote for my mentorship article. I appreciate it.
