I love plants, but am not able to garden in the yard, so I simply use container gardening to fulfill my desire for having beautiful plants around.

Being a descendant of many farmers and women who excelled in having a green thumb, I’ve learned a lot from them. I will share here what I have learned from my grandparents and parents about gardening as well as container gardening.

- Get a Farmer’s Almanac

First of all, farmers pay a great deal of attention to the elements, and we should as well. They generally follow the Farmer’s Almanac, so if you can get ahold of a copy it will serve you well. Around here, you can get them free at the feed and seed stores as well as the local drug store.

Farmers are able to generate good crops and harvesting by generally paying attention to the phase of the moon. New moons are great for planting as during the new moon things are growing along with the moon. Therefore, plant during new moons. Actually, learning a bit about astrology will do you well while you are considering growing plants, whether you choose to grow a container garden, a regular outdoor garden, a vegetable or flower garden, a water garden or any other type of garden, in order to get the best results from your time and efforts.

- Plant & Transplant during New Moons

If you want to see a real difference in the plants you grow, plant, transplant of re-pot during a new moon. New moons are growing moons. You can safely pull weeds while the moon is full since this will hinder a spurt in growth, which makes this an ideal time for pulling weeds you do not want to grow in your yard or garden.

Water moons are the very best for planting, transplanting and growing. Therefore, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the best new moons for generating great looking plants. Of course, any of these are good; however, Pisces is the best moon and then Scorpio and then Cancer. If you plant during a Pisces new moon, you will get better results than planting during a Cancer new moon.

Another trick I learned from one of my grandfathers is to plant during a Gemini new moon. Why?  Well, Gemini is the twins, after all. This means when you plant during a Gemini new moon, whatever you’re planting will yield you twice as much!

All right, now that we have that taken care of, get your almanac and a good calendar that provides you with the moon phases. Around here we can get these free at the drug store as well.

We will cover the gardening supplies you will need in Part 2
