Healthy Dog Food - A Checklist of What to Look For

As puppies dogs definitely have different eating habits than they do when they start to get older. The number of times you feed your dog each day can definitely play a large role in your dog’s nutritional health. You don’t want to underfeed your dog as he may lose weight, may not have a lot of energy, and is more susceptible to ailments. Underfeeding your dog can also lead to him not having enough of a certain nutrient, which can cause a big issue. At the same time, over-feeding your dog is also bad. If you feed your dog too much food each day, he runs the risk of becoming overweight. Dogs that are overweight have a higher chance of joint and heart disease. Dogs that weigh too much can also contract diabetes.

In the end, the number of meals you feed your dog in a day will depend upon his age, and nutritional needs. There is no one answer that fits all dogs. Some smaller dogs don’t need to eat as much as a large breed dog, but the meal can always be broken down into smaller meals throughout the day.

When dogs are puppies, most dog owners will give their dog a full bowl of food and let him eat to his heart’s desire. As a rule of thumb, puppies are supposed to eat at the minimum of four times a day. Puppies need to eat so much food because of the rapid amount of growth that they will experience within the next few months. The food given to puppies helps to provide them with all of their nutritional needs.

Once dogs grow out of the puppy stage and are about 3-5 months old, three meals a day is usually a sufficient amount of food. This way your dog is still receiving enough food for anymore growing he might do within the next few months.

When your dog becomes an adult, you can reduce the number of meals to one or two meals a day. Usually most dog owners will feed their dog in the morning before they leave for work, and then feed the second meal once they get home. This way the dog has enough food to last him throughout the day, and enough to make it through the night without being hungry. This reduction of meals will also help to keep your dog at a healthy weight.
