Every month is known to have some sort of special topic or designation. Some months even have several special titles. Some, like Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, are serious business. Other designations are for marketing or are just plain fun. If you are looking for an escape from the doldrums and are looking for something out of the ordinary that combines seriousness with fun, you are in luck. November is National Drum Month!
In 1995, the Percussion Marketing Council was formed to become the trade organization of the industry. It was this organization that came up with the idea for National Drum Month as part of a targeted marketing plan. The Percussion Marketing Council wanted to come up with an advertising campaign that would appeal to a broader audience. From middle school students to adults, the advertising campaign seems to have hit the mark.
Once the domain of only guys, the number of people tapping on a drum has changed. A big surprise to some is the number of girls who have taken up the hobby. A 2006 survey revealed surprising results. Just over half of all the drummers surveyed are girls! Many see this as a welcome change from just a few years ago when most girls opted to play flute or clarinet.
The goals of the Percussion Marketing Council for National Drum Month include the promotion of drumming as a positive experience that everyone can enjoy. Other goals also include market expansion and the creation of a stronger voice within the closely knit music industry.
So with such a fun theme to November as National Drum Month, are you ready to celebrate? Participating is easy. Follow the ideas on the list below and you will be on your way to enjoying a new hobby.
