Four Common Myths About Feeding Your Dog a Raw Diet

#1 – Feeding raw meat to your dog will make him vicious

No, feeding raw meat to a dog does NOT make them vicious. What it MAY do is make them become more protective of their food. Look at it this way. I give you a $10 bill and then some big guy tries to grab it from you. How much of a fight are you going to put up? But what if I give you TEN $10 bills? Or ten $100 bills? Now you will probably put up more of a fight to keep those.

It is the same for the dog. You have just given them an item of higher value than their regular kibble – a nice piece of meat. Yes, they may try to guard it from you. But that is a TRAINING issue – not a problem caused by the meat itself.

My dogs all eat a 100% raw diet and, if necessary, I can reach down and take anything from their mouths at any time. This is because I have TRAINED them to allow me to do that.

#2 – Chicken bones are dangerous and can kill your dog

The problem is that statement is not specific enough. COOKED chicken bones are dangerous. In fact cooked bones of ANY kind are dangerous. When bones are cooked the moisture is removed and they become dry and brittle.

Raw bones are softer. Chickens have the softest bones due to the fact that they are processed at roughly eight weeks of age. Their bones don’t have a chance to toughen up.

Over the past 10+ years my dogs have consumed over ten THOUSAND pounds of raw chicken with bones and I have not had a single problem. Statistically speaking, if RAW chicken bones were that dangerous I would have encountered at least ONE problem by now.

#3 – Feeding a balanced raw diet is complicated

Most dog food manufacturers want you to think that it is very difficult to create a balanced diet for your pets on your own. That’s their job – to provide that balanced diet in a convenient bag or can.

Feeding your dog a balanced raw diet is no more difficult than feeding yourself. It is not as easy as opening a bag and scooping out some kibble and it’s more than just dropping some raw meat in their bowl – but with a little knowledge and planning ANYONE can feed their dogs a healthy, balanced raw diet.

It IS worth the extra work. Not only will your dog be more excited about meal times but they will also be healthier.

#4 – Feeding a raw diet is too expensive

The actual cost of feeding a raw diet can compare to feeding a top quality commercial dry food, but the cost savings comes in other areas.

A dog fed a balanced raw diet rarely needs their teeth cleaned. Teeth cleaning can cost $300 or more.

A dog fed a balanced carbohydrate free raw diet is much less likely to have allergy problems. Allergy tests and medications can run in the thousands of dollars.

With some research and a little effort you can be on your way to having a happier and healthier dog!
