For many people they find multi-tasking a difficult thing to do. They have this list in their head of things they wanted to accomplish before retiring for the night and at the end of the day only accomplish 1/10 of what they wanted to do and forgot the other 9/10ths or blew them off. Since I became a free lance writer I have become the queen of mult-tasking. Let me give you a sample of my typical day. I get up, get my tea, knock the cobwebs out of my head and first thing I do is my writing and publishing assignments for the day. On a typical day this is 2-3 articles 400 words long each.
Once that is accomplished my day really begins, house work and other chores. Yesterday for example I wrote 3 articles, published 12 articles, scrubbed an area rug, transplantted sunflowers, weeded my garden, balanced my checking account and started a new register, made my grocery list up, watered all the inside and outside plants, did my laundry including my bedding, organized my bills, fixed a laundry bag, sewed a shirt, practiced my vocal exercizes, did some minor shopping, cooked a meal and still had time to read and watch my favorite program.
This is trully a typical day for me and I realize I work from home but the tasks we do whether we work at home or not are all about planning your time. Here’s a few things i find that help.
- I bought a to do book, not a list, an actual calendar book just for my daily to do’s
- I keep it right at hand where i can check it through out the day.
- I list the things that need to be done on certain days, including what bills are due and all my daily "stuff"
- As I’m doing things I cross them off and when I notice things that need done I write them on my list as I go through my day.
- If I didn’t get something done I don’t make a big deal out of it I simply put a different mark on it and move it to the next day
- As I work down my list I try to do as many tasks as I can at one time, like cooking and laundry at the same time, scrubbing the rug and doing house chores while doing my vocal exercizes, etc
- Usually my day starts out with about 6 things on my list and some days it grows to a list of 20 or more things, but since I started doing this I’ve noticed how much more I get accomplished and how well organized my days are. Keep in mind the daily disruptions and I don’t kick myself if I don’t get every little thing done, my main concern is the priorities, like paying bills. After that it’s all just what we can do on a day to day basis to help us have a little more time to enjoy things in life.
