How I ‘greened’ my life with my iPhone.
I just graduated from college with my bachelors degree. To tell the truth I miss it, but graduation was the proudest moment of my life. This marked the end of a lot of things for me and one of the greatest was my vow to myself to abstain from many things. I love gadgets always have and when the iPhone came out it took damn near everything I had not to waist precious money on it.
Now I’m a green person and I do what I can as much as I reasonably can to be green. I do not inconvenience my life, I change it. So my things are small ones that I always know will be permanent since I give so little up in many steps rather than a few large sacrifices.
One of my greatest green moments was going paperless with notes. Now I think I can successfully say I’ve gone paperless in nearly all aspects of my life.
My iPhone is now my: phone, camera, picture album, calendar, address book, notepad, books, notes, everything digital!
Well not everything but it feels like it some times.
Obviously my phone does things like calls all the normal bells and whistles these days… but certain apps can save a lot of useless junk elsewhere in your life… like paper usage.
Calendar is used to keep track of everything coming up in the near future or long ahead future. Its a good way to keep track of just about all of your engagements due dates and what not.
Todo Lite keeps tracks of those random things of which I must keep on top of… it only allows 10 things for free. But, by only using it for high priority items at the last minute these are things that would not be in calendar and stick out more by being in a program unto themselves. Just delete instead of completing the task to bypass the negative part of the ‘Lite’ version.
BriefcaseLite is my most favorite thing ever… it connects to my laptop and gives me access to my notes and papers and just about everything I might need in a pinch. Just like a flash drive… but no physical connection ever needed. The issue I have found though is that I run a macbook and often do not have my computer running all the time. It is mostly with me, so I have to upload things in advance.
CashFlow Free gives me a great location to keep up to date notes on all things money. If I spend a buck on a drink, I can put it in my phone in a couple seconds. Perhaps not impressive but when your on a budget, knowing every cent spent helps conserve a lot of cents.
SnapTell Explorer gives me a great overview of prices for books, dvds, cds or video games simply by taking a picture. I use this as a way to keep track of the same objects that I wish to get around to seeing or reading.
YellowPages is obvious.
Handshake allows me to exchange business cards with others via our phones… though I’ve yet to get to do it, I’m sure a lot of people have.
I think the key thing to do for any iPhone user who wants to get a little more green is to check out the apps. Most the free apps are great and offer a lot of what you need to simplify your life an the things you consume.
