Delights for a vast assortment of golden creations were the inspiration of the Romans and the Greeks. However, after the fall of the Roman Empire, there came a dramatic stand still in the production of items made of gold. Although, it was centuries before the Spanish found the Americas, to find that the Incas believed that gold was the result of the sun sweating. When the Incas invaded and took control of the Chimu Empire, they forced the goldsmiths of that empire to cover the Temple of the Sun completely in layers of gold in honor of their deities. As late as 1848, many felt the need to search for their fortune during the California gold rush.
