How to use Google for your real estate business
I got a Google email account over a year ago. I really like it. I’ve only been let down about one thing with gmail. There is a discard button, right on the side of the save button. About a week ago, I was interrupted by a phone call and when I returned to the email I was working on, a very involved one with figures and bullet lists and so on, I accidentally hit the discard button for the first time. I must have gave me a wrning after I did, but I’ve seen that warning since then, and I must say it isn’t a real eye-grabber.
One of the cool features of gmail, is that it saves a copy of your draft as you are composing it, about every minute or so. I thought for sure I would find what I was working on in there minus no more than a minute of work. Unfortunately, when you “discard” a message you get rid of the draft as well. All my work was gone…boo-hoo!
Anyway, I still love ya Google! I did it all over, and it even came out a little better. This factoid isn’t a rant about Google’s discard button. It’s a rave about their “docs beta.” I’m composing this factoid on it now. It has all the basics of Microsoft Word. They have docs for spreadsheets as well as other apps, but the focus here is Word. Like Gmail, Google docs saves your changes every minute or so, on line. That means that your hard drive could get struck by lightning -you’re still in good shape.
What makes docs really awesome is the way it allows collaborators to group together to work on the same document. Every minute, automatically, or as soon as you hit the “save” button up at the top, don’t worry, no discard buttons anywhere in sight, all the changes and edits done by whom ever (did I get that right? I’ve never mastered the who-whom thing, and I’m still struggling with me-I…Grammar advice welcomed in comments) are saved. I’ve been collaborating on a few projects with some friends here at Factoidz.com. You guys also rock!
I and one other (how-my doin’ English majors?) have been using the docs application to our greatest advantage. It is so much easier to do than saving, filing, attaching, opening, editing, sending and then going back to step one. We will write and edit, in nice big black, Veranda 14 pt. letters (to my advantage -at 41, I’m fighting glasses-wearing tooth and nail) And make notes to each other in red. It saves and organizes the docs much like an email application. It makes it simple to invite other individuals to be able to view your docs, with or without editing privileges.
You can use this without a gmail account, however you will need a Google account. I do suggest a gmail account because of the ease in which you can transfer a document attached to an email to the Google docs application. You have three simple choices. You can view the document in HTML, you can download it and make edits the hard way, or you can open it with Google docs in one click. I highly recommend this application, especially for those who may be using an word processing application inferior to Word, and to those who want to collaborate on writing projects. Check it out!
Google Docs rocks!
