Kitchens and baths are where it’s at. Year in and year out, they continue to be the most popular home remodels and the focus of many home improvement projects. Real estate agents know they are also the two areas of the home that have the greatest influence on the selling price—and for good reason. We spend a lot of time in our kitchens and baths. As much television as we watch in our living room, as much time as we spend in the home office surfing the web, food and cleanliness are still our most fundamental needs. Kitchen and bath contractors are always looking for ways to improve these important areas of your home. Whether you want a complete kitchen or bath remodel or you’re simply looking for new cabinet hardware and countertops, these contractors can add considerable value to your home and your quality of life.

Kitchen and Bath Remodeling Contractors
For full kitchen and bath remodeling contractors, a comprehensive plan is critical. You can create this plan with remodeling decisions and budgetary constraints largely on your own or with your kitchen and bath remodeling contractors. The key is once you have a plan stick to it. Otherwise, you can see your budget blown to pieces. A good contractor will be knowledgeable and eager to offer his or her opinions about a specific area or remodeling idea but will ultimately leave the decision to you and help you feel comfortable with that decision.

General Kitchen and Bath Contractors
Many kitchen and bath contractors specialize in other areas of home improvement than single room remodels. Often, a kitchen and bath contractor will specialize in cabinets and countertops. If you can’t decide whether you want to remodel your kitchen or bath, partial remodels of both rooms can be the way to go. Simply installing new cabinets and countertops can dramatically improve the look and function of each room. If you absolutely can’t stand the look of the old linoleum floor, a complete remodel may be necessary.

How to Find and Hire a Contractor
Many problems that arise working with kitchen and bath contractors could’ve been solved if the homeowner had simply taken the time to talk to several contractors. Getting references and checking up on them can help you find a qualified professional, but only taking the time to talk with different contractors about your project and getting written estimates will ensure that you find the right fit for you. This consultation process will also set you on the right path toward creating a comprehensive plan. Again, you want to feel comfortable with what’s going on and a contractor isn’t going to be thrilled changing course mid-way through a project.

As with any large home improvement project, you shouldn’t be required to pay the entire balance of the project upfront. Clearly stated written contracts can help avoid miscommunications and help resolve disputes in the worst-case scenario. Most remodels are paid for with financing and home equity, but otherwise, paying with a credit card can create an extra buffer for your financial liability.
