I am on the threshold of three quarters of a century and have picked up a few tricks that I believe have helped me stay healthy. Can’t guarantee they will work for everyone or anyone but you might wish to give them a try if relevant to you.
Longevity:
It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that the more efficiently one uses oxygen the healthier will be the benefit. There are two lungs. One lung consists of two chambers and the other has three. Information available to me says most lung problems begin in that third chamber because of stagnation from lack of oxygen.
There are three methods of breathing: shallow, belly, & chi. Shallow (or mouth) breathing is the higher risk method. Belly breathing is not the most effective method. Chi breathing emanates from a point about two inches below the navel. Regardless of the method, inhalation & exhalation begins and ends in their respective area. The opportunity to watch a sleeping baby is a clue. The chest does not move in the breathing process. Inhalation occurs through the nose, exhalation occurs through the nose. We are born to breathe from our Chi but somewhere along the way many people revert to other method through new habit development. Perhaps laziness or smoking leads to the shallow (mouth) breathing habit. Though I cannot prove it, and know of no study that addresses it, I have come to believe most cancers are caused by the effects of improper breathing. Tireness and stress might stem from the way we breathe. There is more information on Chi breathing in Golf, Part Six: Breathing & Tempo. You might wish to discuss the process with a doctor or physical therapist.
Hair & Scalp:
When I was a young man, a friend and I suffered from dandruff and falling hair. We came across a local barber who everyone called “the Great One” because he had a secret elixir reputed to stop hair from falling out & to eliminate dandruff. It did for us. It was also supposed to regenerate hair growth, but I cannot attest to that.
We went our separate ways and years later my hair began falling out again, and I was turning gray. I called my friend after 40 years. He had gone bald. I did not have the secret formula but tried the next best thing, for we had discovered one of the ingredients—cider vinegar.
I began applying full strength (an ounce or so) cider vinegar after shampooing before bedtime. Just to give it a try. There is some stinging. The odour is most unpleasant until it dries, but not as offensive as the full-blown formula. To make sure of the benefit I would go to bed and rinse in the morning. I do not know if rinsing after drying works as well, but that is an option. I also began taking a daily folic acid supplement.
Not only did my hair stop falling out, but I stopped turning gray for about five years. The graying is slowly returning (aging), but colour is still there (salt & pepper). I hope it works for you. Check with your doctor for his opinion.
