All dogs need fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and of course, protein. While each dog needs protein, some dogs will need to have higher levels within their bodies to ensure that they can do the tasks they need to do. Protein is one source of a dog’s energy, so it’s important that your dog is getting enough. At the same time, protein isn’t only a nutrient, it is also an amino acid that helps with body tissues, enzymes, organs, hormones, and plenty of other things found within the body. However, a high protein diet isn’t for all dogs, but it really doesn’t harm your dog. Most of the protein will be excreted and the leftover amounts will be used for energy or turned into fat.

Protein found in your dog’s food can either come from meat or plant sources. Most dog food companies will use corn gluten meal, as it has a large amount of protein, but it is definitely not the best ingredient. Some dog food companies will give you a percentage of the amount of protein in the food. If not, you can always look for ingredients that have a lot of protein in them. These are usually grains.

The amount of protein your dog needs really depends on its age and the level of activity. For example, if your dog is a racing sled dog or a performance dog, he will need to have protein levels of about 25%-35%. This ensures that the dog will have enough energy in order to pull sleds, herd animals, or do whatever tasks it has to do each day. Puppies also need a lot of protein as it helps their bodies grow strong and healthy. Usually a puppy should have a protein amount of about 28%. This means that a lactating mother will also need the same protein levels so that the protein can pass through her milk and into the puppies.

To ensure that your dog is getting enough protein, be sure you are buying a decent quality food. Most companies will put enough ingredients in their foods that protein isn’t an issue. Just make sure that you are buying a dog food that is in the middle price range. If you buy dog food that is too cheap, your dog may not be getting enough protein.

In the end, high protein diets don’t exactly hurt dogs. However, if your dog has a kidney problem, high protein diets are not recommended, as they could make the dog’s ailment even worse.
