When someone talks about studying business, the images that come to mind are students on a work placement or a hard nosed executive poring over a mass of heavy of company paraphernalia. However, things are changing and the Masters of Business Administration (or the MBA as it is more commonly known) is a prime example. Although real-life business can teach you a lot, a solid theoretical base can be crucial in help to either kick start your business or take it to a new level.
It may be glib to say that having an MBA will solve your business problems because it won’t, but it will help give you the tools to spot them quicker and deal with them more efficiently. I do not want to bore you with ‘businessese’ or ‘educationese.’ So in order to show you how the MBA can help your business, I will name some of the core subjects that are covered during the course and how they apply.
Accounting and Finance – This area deals with presentation of financial information and accounting data to help ensure accountability, decision making and planning. This area is crucial for any business large or small. If you can keep an eye on the financial incomings and outgoings, then it will be easier to make changes that will save you money and help our business.
Managing People (HR) – Staff are a key aspect of a business. Managing people, their relationships, how they operate, even any cultural issues may help reduce employee turnover, boost morale and possibly increase productivity. This can help not only your company’s reputation but its bottom line.
Marketing - The role played by marketing cannot be underestimated. By examining the link between marketing and business performance, an organisation can adopt something that helps bring success. It also shows the importance of having a well researched and executed marketing plan.
Operations Management – this is basically how a company works. The subjects dealt with would include supply chain management, forecasting and project management. By investigating and making changes to the way things are run can lead to changes which can make your business more competitive.
Strategic Management – This is self explanatory. This will also cover corporate responsibility. It examines the area of strategic formulation and implementation.
These are key areas where an MBA can help you as an individual and as a business. There are no guarantees but making the necessary changes will give your company an edge.
