There are some noteworthy occasions which bear special significance for each Sangrand (the Sankranti), the "cusp" day of transition from one sign of the zodiak to the next. Of special significance for a particular Sangrand is the Vaisakhi at Takhat Shri Kesgarh Sahib, at Shri Anandpur Sahib.
You know, it was on this day that teachings of the Gurbani got the two aspects combined as the mystic saint and mystically-disciplined one. It is a day for concentrating on service and duty as the mystical path as described in the Gurbani.
You see, to do charitable activities includes different types of charitable works: rendering service to the needy people, places, and all other living identities and offering donations. These have mystical significance in all religions, faiths and beliefs of our world. It is as if celebrating peace and harmony on earth, as all people on the globe; pray on this day for the welfare of all. On this day people go to the religious places (in Sikhism the religious place is Gurudwara Sahib, the similar word to temple, church or any other place of any faith).
Magh is of great importance at Shri Mukatsar Sahib; and so on for other Sangrand days. It has importance that the mysticism of religion is forgiveness not punishment. The believers, to offer prayers and Parshad, also visit many religious places.
The preparation of sweet foods and special Parshad for this occasion at home is offered to the Guru or the Deity. In the Indian Philosophy of Religions, Metaphysics and Mysticism, the sweetness represents the humility and serving others voluntarily.
The Indian religions, faiths and thus the metaphysical faculties as the sects of mysticism provide us with special mantras, Puja (worship), path (prayers) etc. for the Sangrand. The most significant includes the Festival of Sankranti that is popularly known as the ‘Makar Sankranti’, when in the Indian astrology, the Sun transits through the sign of Capricorn. The popular places for holy bathing are the ones near Ganges and particularly the Haridwara.
It is believed that any recitation of Mantra and other ways of recitation, worship and donations give ten times greater fruits on this day. It may be still greater on the particular Sankranti, as is that of the Magh, when the Sun transits through the sign of Capricorn (Aquarius in Western astrology).
Thus, the Transition of Sun through various signs has special significance in Indian Religions, Faiths and Beliefs, with special consideration to Indian Way of Metaphysics, Mysticism and thus Spiritual Cleansing of body, mind, heart and the soul.
