Movies are interesting and exciting to watch; there are some movies which make us happy, others make us sad. There are a wide variety of movies, of  different genres, from the comedies and the action movies to the horror and the thrillers. In order to be a film critic, it is essential to know the different  aspects which come together to make the movie complete.

The Movie GuideThe first step toward learning how to be a movie critic is to read a movie guide and to take notes about the important features of a movie that are mentioned. In the movie guide you will also notice different sections of interest.

History of Cinema :  In order to know more about the background of cinema, it is also essential to know the fascinating history of cinema. You will be introduced to the story of cinema from the days of the silent film, gradually moving into black and white, then evolving into the Technicolor productions, to today’s Dolby Digital sound systems and special effects. The transformation of the film reel to the VHS cassette, then to the CD, DVD and now to the introduction of the Blu-Ray Disc is a milestone in the history of cinema.

Movie Appreciation: The best way to understand the ingredients of a successful movie is to watch a couple of good ones, bad ones and to make written notes about the features which make an impression on your mind. You need to develop a love for the movies to truly appreciate the role of cinema and your role as a cinema critic.

Elements of a Good Movie: A few important points to keep in mind as an aspiring movie critic are given below:

a. Story: Does the movie have a good, bad or a very sketchy and ineffective storyline? What is your opinion?

b. Direction: Has the Director done justice to the story, if it was based on a book or play? Could the Director have treated the whole story in a more creative way?

c. Production: Is the movie production up to a good standard or does it look  like a low-budget production?

d. Actors and Actresses: Were the actors suitable for the characters whom they h portrayed in the movie? Was there room for improvement, or was the actor a complete misfit for the role?

e. Location: Make a note of the location of the movie and if it was effective in bringing the story to life.

f. Photography and Special Effects: This is an essential point to note as a movie with excellent photography will go a long way in making it a success. There are some movies which need a lot of special effects, as the sets or the situations are too creative to obtain in the real world.

g. Script: A movie is ensured success if it has a great scriptwriter or a team of gifted scriptwriters, who can make characters come to life and command attention in the movie.

h. Choreography: The choreographer is also an important player in making the movie a success, from the Dance choreographer to the action sequence choreographers.

A vital point to always remember is that you will be making a big difference for every movie which you review as a movie critic. There are a lot of moviegoers who read the movie reviews before going to see the movie. You should try to make a good judgment, as your movie review will be read by thousands and will ensure the success or the failure of the movie. Keep in mind, that you as a movie critic with your influential movie critic powers, comes your greater responsibility to the cinemagoer.
