A guide to buying a used car

Many people are weary of buying used cars because of the car’s uncertain past. Many wonder about the level of care the car has had with previous owners and do not want to inherit a worn out vehicle. However, rental cars are used cars that have had exceptional maintenance due to industry standards. Rental car companies are required to give their cars frequent maintenance inspections and services while the car is part of their rental fleet. This is typically way more attention than the average car owner gives their vehicle. Here are some tips for buying rental cars.

Take the car to an independent mechanic for an inspection. Since the car has gone through rigorous maintenance tests there probably will not be anything wrong with it, but this may give you some added peace of mind.

Most used car buyers search for a CARFAX report on the car. This is a great idea, and used rental car buyers should also obtain a report about the vehicle’s history.

Ask the rental car company about the existing warranty. Most rental cars will have a warranty that will be transferred to you if you buy the car, but Enterprize and Hertz throw in an additional warranty. They offer to provide a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty and an extended test drive. If you decide you do not want the car after you bring it home, you can bring it back. All you have to pay is a restocking fee. You must have put less than 1,000 miles on the car and have had it for less than a week to take advantage of this offer.

To buy a rental car, search for rental companies like Hertz, Budget, Enterprise, National, Avis, and Thrifty.
