How to Choose the Right Chihuahua Puppy

Could Your Dog or Puppy Have Kennel Cough?

With the release of recent movies showcasing this breed, the Chihuahua has become very popular. Before making that decision to bring one of these little guys into your home and family you should know a little more about this precious breed of dog.

The Chihuahua is recognized as the smallest breed of dog, weighing in at about 6 lbs. or less. That however is not written in stone as they can be over 7 lbs in some cases, which is outside of the norm. If you are not planning on breeding or showing your dog than weight standards should not be an issue.

There could be some temperament issues with a Chihuahua as some of them tend to not favor strangers. They are very close to their families though and can be very protective of them despite their size. Regardless of their “nippy” little reputations, they have also been trained to be very friendly, loving and cuddly with others. It takes a lot of spoiling, babying them, nurturing and tenderness and you will get a very affectionate pet. When choosing your Chihuahua, ask to see the parents of the litter and their dispositions which can give you a little hint on the bloodlines and characteristics of your new baby.

The Chihuahua is a very bright intelligent dog who is quite a challenge to train. Their attention span is “I don’t have time for this” but they can be trained. It takes a little more patience on your part. Again, study the parents of the new pup to see their behaviors and traits. It may give you a little insight as to the quality and family traits of the new pup.

There are a few issues with these little guys as, for one, they like to hear themselves at times and tend to look for things to bark at. Secondly, they may seem to be one of the hardest breeds to house break, not outgrowing an occasional accident. Being that they are always cold, they love to burrow somewhere so be sure to check under those covers, pillows, and clothes tossed on the floor. You may be surprised to find a dog hiding under there for warmth.

Chihuahuas are intelligent, charming and witty pets that are a welcome addition to any family. Look for a good quality breeder who will give you a health guarantee in writing as well as documentation of shot records and worming. This will let you know whether or not the puppies show any signs of having defects or the potential to harbor any unwanted diseases, like parvo and distemper.

So, if you want a great companion, bold and saucy yet very loyal and affectionate, this is a great choice for your family. They tend to be accepting of other dogs brought into the family as well.

I love dogs, but I had a bad experience with chihuahau's so they would not be my first choice

In writing my articles, most times I try to refrain from writing in the 1st person as I sometimes write for other sites. What I wanted to say, though, is that we have 3 Chihuahuas and so many people have commented on how friendly and very much unlike the normal traits of the breed. Trust me you too would love these guys. We baby them to death like children so in turn they are very loving. We know some of their "relatives" in homes with either boys or not as spoiled situations and they are mean. I truly do believe it is due to the upbringing. Just my opinion. Take Care and thanks. Sorry you had a bad experience with these guys.

I love chihuahuas, I had a girl and she was the sweetest dog. Somehow she got out and someone must have taken her, we put up signs but never got her back. I want another one, I just can't seem to find one that I connect with like her. thanks for the article, maybe I will try again this Christmas.

Hi Mechelle - When you go for another Chihuahua, you have to have an open mind and not look for one exactly like the little darling you lost. We have 3 now, have had 3 others that are now in heaven, and they were all different. Yet, they were all very sweet . . . and I know people who have had Chihuahuas that are very mean. It is all in how we "baby" and spoil them. Ours are lovers and our little boy is happy 100% of the time, with anyone. The half sister of one of ours, who is in a house of predominantly males (brother-in-law) who tease her all the time, is very mean to strangers (and us). It is so sad when someone takes a beloved pet and not try to find the rightful owner. Good luck. They are darling, just spoil and baby her (and keep her indoors) and you will have a loving friend for life.
