Twitter is a widespread trend as thousands post about their lives and their thoughts. However, too often twitters post trivial information (i.e. "Didn’t sleep well last night") instead of posting good online content such as funny pictures, inspiring videos, and interesting articles. Your twitter followers will appreciate (and grow!) if you post content that is enjoyable for them.

  • Your goal is to post content that can be accessed quickly. Most likely, your followers don’t have the time to watch a 10 minute YouTube video or to view an online album of 100+ pictures, so don’t post content that will require a lot of their time. Also, remember this: you want to post new (or fresh) content instead of posting content that has already been seen by almost everyone. The internet is vast and with a little bit of searching, you can find interesting and fun material that few others have seen.
  • Look in online communities. There are many online communities that center around finding and posting fresh material. For example, browse the popular posts at Digg.com, Tumblr.com, and StumbleUpon.com. These websites are updated daily with fresh material that cover a wide range of topics.
  • Look in popular blogs. Usually bloggers spend a lot of time browsing the internet and they find lots of good content. For example, sift through the posts at BoingBoing.net or Lifehacker.com. Discover what people are blogging about at Technorati.com or BuzzFeed.com.
Also, search the internet for popular blogs that center around your favorite genre, such as music, historical trivia, or show biz. When you find a good blog, subscribe to it and visit it frequently. These blogs will keep you well stocked with links and stories worth sharing on Twitter.
  • Use Google keywords. Want to find a funny picture to post? Search Google for something creative, like "funny hippopotamus yawn" or "amazing face paint". Other Google searches might include "Top Ten lists" or "Bizarre places to visit" or "How to add funny effects to pictures".

Enjoy browsing the internet. As you look over blogs and online communities, you’ll find goodies worth posting and sharing with others. Keep browsing, keep discovering, and keep posting. :)

I have a question about Twitter. How do you begin to get a following, let alone a big following.

Hey Sam, the best way to start a following is to spread your twitter around to people you are ALREADY connected with, via Facebook and MySpace. Update your status message to read: "Hey I have a twitter now...Link:" and share the link with your friends. To grow your followers...post material that they will share with their friends...this is how more people will find you. Good luck!
