Your mind is begging to know what cloud computing is.
Let start now. First thing to do is to think that all your information in your computer will have to go to the Internet and leave your computer forever. This is not bad at all, information online is much more secure than information offline, it’s already encrypted, it’s always backed up and it’s also free!. Where is the best place to trust your information to? I would say email for many reasons. The first one is everyone uses email so it’s very flexible, there are many free email services, many free email software to download your email to the computer and finally the email can even be encrypted and you will enjoy AES secret services grade security. Email is also a tool you are used to use daily so not time or money required to additional training.
Why not Google Docs for example? Because their technology is still very new and since few people find it useful they do no spend too many resources to make it better.
Why not Zoho or Ghost? They are private companies which are very small and very new too, they are not very reliable. You cannot do many things with their tools too such as sending all the information to the desktop.
However the reason number one why you should use email instead of any other online tool is the SEARCH feature. With email all your information flies around one single search box, no need to complicate things or to search multiple places to get what you want.
How long will it take to send all your information to the email? It depends on your Internet speed connection. Faster connections are a must. If you do not use DSL yet forget about online computing. With an email client such as Thunderbird you can easily send everything to the email. Send documents as Attachments.
Which should be your selected email service? With recent improvements Hotmail is a great candidate to be a winner and Yahoo too. However none of them have encryption and free pop3 access to download the email to any computer in case you have a very fast one to speed up email search. If security is not a concern to you, I would go for Hotmail. It’s faster than Yahoo, it has almost unlimited space plus it’s interface is clean. However if you want totally unlimited space to put there all the information you ever found in your life or career then the only option is Yahoo.
Now with unlimited space for information there is just one unanswered question: How are you going to read all that information in your lifetime?
