Keeping your eyes looking gorgeous is not simply down to choosing the shade and brand of mascara and getting your eyebrows waxed and shaped. The area around the eyes frames them and if that does not look amazing, it will not give those fabulous eyes the best possible setting.
The skin around the eyes is very thin and has few oil glands, and it is also very delicate. In fact, the older you get, the more fragile this area becomes. It is very easy to stretch the skin here and that’s the last thing you want to do.
Eye creams need to be gentle and soft and their application needs to be the same way. Do it very gently. Also be aware of hygiene ,because old eye creams, or pots of ointment that have been standing around without lids contain bacteria. Renew these frequently and keep the lids tightly closed.
When choosing essential oils to apply to this area, only buy the best and ensure that the label says ‘100% cold-pressed essential oil’. Cheap oils may contain a whole variety of additives including dangerous chemicals like creosote, so take care.
Eyes never look good if we suffer from lack of sleep, drink too much alcohol or don’t take any exercise. Too much reading and sitting in front of a computer monitor can also make them look tired. If you use a computer for long periods of time, take a brief rest every fifteen minutes and look around the room, out of the window, or whatever, just to move your eyes around and refocus them.
To relax strained eyes, wash your hands, and then cup them over your eyes so that no light can come through. Keep your eyes open and just look at the darkness for ten minutes. Then press gently along the ridge of bone between the eye and eyebrow.
If your eyes look puffy use cold, used tea bags over the lids, or place slices of cucumber on the lids for ten minutes and you’ll notice the difference.
To make your own eye cream take:
1 tablespoon of lanolin,
2 teaspoons almond oil
2 teaspoons wheat germ oil
1 teaspoon apricot oil
Mix this together with 2 teaspoons of boiled water in a sterilized screw top jar and shake. Place the jar in hot water to warm the contents if it does not mix well. You can also change the proportion of oils, or even leave one out if you don’t have any, as long as the overall quantity is the same. Almond and apricot oils are certainly best to use around the eyes. If adding essential oil for fragrance to the mixture be extra careful as some essential oils can irritate the eyes. Sesame oil, avocado, coconut and a few drops of lavender oil are all suitable.
Take care of the area around your eyes and it will show them off to their full potential.
