We have many disabled children in our families and society at large. They need special care. The following are the main seven points about what they need most:
1. The introduction of life skills as the art of living for disabled children is necessary. It needs to be at their communication and skill levels and, for everyone.
2. Positive mental health springs from how one is brought up, heredity and environment. Communication skills enable one to remove or mitigate any drawback or setback present in maintaining the mental health.
3. The people who can run and win a race differ physically, but mentally speaking, we usually avoid believing that mental health has many problems in communicating properly. The blind can communicate by reading by touch (Braille), and other handicapped persons have many other options. So, ultimately the need is for communication skills. Communication skills can help the both disabled and non-disabled, to understand in a better way and thus cooperate with one another. It is an art to make sense out of what one has in mind and also in action–the behavior or interaction in any form exhibiting thoughts and emotions.
4. The action that we mainly need is what we, as "normal", are educated to do: read and write. But the disabled children have other ways to express themselves. This expression that we lack, the disabled ones are not given enough credit for having extra training that makes them different and unique. We seem to overpower them because our mental health concepts have put them in a different category–even though they are educated in a practical way that we usually are not. They spend their entire life in learning, while we the normal ones stop learning at certain age or qualification.
5. In developing counties and even in the developed ones, the expectations and anticipations of parents and others remain a great burden on the children. If a normal child gets lower grades, it is a burdensome condition for the child. Our social structure gives the disabled a weak reputation that results in a lack of parental or family support. Thus, we lack social awareness; there is also problem with gender bias, abortions, and/or an ignorant kind of attitude, that the disabled face most severely.
6. The concept of a sense of equality for all has been present among all major civilizations. The spiritual concept of congregation gives all an equal opportunity. It is called spiritual or faith healing. However, it is communication skills that we need in our society.
7. We need to focus on better interaction, but when there is a communication gap, it is worse than the generation gap–and we need to make sure that all are given equal opportunities. Thus, communication skill enhances the art of living, the civilized way of living, so that we make this world a better place for both the disabled and the normal children. Even the elder ones need it. So, we need to introduce the learning of communication skills from not just the teachers, tutors and other trainers, but from the counselors, who can guide all matters in a right way and solve this social disability.
