Parents are very tired when they get home from work, but if you have children you know your work is just beginning. There are so much more that has to be done before you can settle down yourself. After everyone has been fed and taken their baths, then it is time for homework.
After the children come home from school they are usually hungry and very tired. I would always let mine rest awhile before starting the school work. I would want them the feel refreshed and energized so their brain would work better. I know many people do things differently, but this is the way I did it with my children.
Back when my children were small they would bring notes home from the teachers saying what their assignments were for the following day. Today the teacher uses the computer to post them on there for the parents to check and keep up with. I think this is wonderful because some children will not bring their homework home. Stay in touch with their daily work and after they are finished with it tell them what a good job they did on that particular subject. Some kids have more trouble with certain subjects so zero in on this. Some of them they may breeze through but others they may not. Staying involved with your children’s studies is very important in trying to help them succeed. Proof read everything before the teacher gets it. After she gets the homework it’s over then.
Find a good place that is very quiet, without any distractions, and the child feels comfortable being there. Try and go to this place every day. Make this place a study place for just the two of you. Have all their materials always at hand for them to use when they are ready. Getting up and down is a big distraction to both of you. Sometimes this will cause the child to forget what he was doing and you also. The main factor here is to stay focused.
Help your child get motivated. Have the study time be a happy one. Have a drink and cookies available for them. If your child is small you can play games with them concerning math problems. As they get a little older history becomes harder to do. Get out your old books and show them things that happened during your time. Make this time as enjoyable as possible. Discuss things with them as they are studying and they will remember this.
Make sure the children understand how to do their homework. If they can’t get it take another approach to it. There are different ways to get them to understand. You know your child so don’t put on them things they cannot comprehend. Some children are smarter than others. Understand who you child is will bring better grades. The main thing here is to not get angry and upset with your child. Helping children with their homework can be at times very stressful. It can bring on a lot of stress if not done right. The child will do better if they are in a good mood. It is alright to have laughter in your work with them. This makes them look more forward to these times spent with you instead of dreading them.
If your children are older and they do a lot of homework on the computer, make sure that’s exactly what they are doing. The older they get the more they want to play on the computers instead of working on them. Check and see what they are doing every now and then and how they are coming along. Ask them if they need your help with anything. The internet can be used to help the child in every subject. Be sure there are good filters on them before they explore on the internet. A bad picture sticks in a child’s brain for a long time.
If your child is having problems and not making passing grades be sure and talk to their teachers in person to see what the problem is. The teacher may tell you things you had no clue about. Between the two of you I’m sure the problems can be worked out.
Remember the teacher and you are the adults. They have to do what they are told in order to succeed in life. We want our children to grow up being intelligent adults and making wise decisions on their own. It’s our job to teach them now so they will prosper in their new life ahead.
