How to level a wobbly washing machine yourself, and save an expensive repair call

Is your washer wobbling around a lot? I am not talking about it wobbling on occasion when the laundry get distributed in there unequally, I am talking about a constant problem with it wobbling and shaking around causing the drum to bang around. This is not as serious of a problem as you might think it is. In fact it can be easily fixed, and you can do it yourself. Well actually you may need another person to help you tilt the washer, but I am willing to bet a friend or family member who helps you tilt a washer is not going to charge you as much as a repair person.

The first thing you need to do is make sure that all 4 of the feet of your washer are firmly on the ground. The weight of the washer can sometimes cause floors to droop a little bit. If one of the feet is higher than the other you can simply place a tile underneath that foot, or something else that is firm and flat. If the floor has drooped a good deal you will have to deal with that eventually, but for the sake of the washer you should place a thick flat board large enough to hold the washer under neath it to level it out.

If the floor seems level and all the feet seem to be where they should then, you will need to make a quick adjustment. For this you will need a carpenter’s level and an adjustable wrench.

To begin you will need to place the level at the front of the washer on the top. See if the bubble is centered; it most likely is not. You will then need to go down to the bottom of your washer and locate the two front feet of your washer–they should be toward the front on both sides.

Using the adjustable wrench, loosen the locknuts on the front leveling feet.  The locknut is at the very top of the washer foot.  After you locate and loosen the locknuts, then turn the front wheel, and check the level to see if the bubble is now centered.  If not, adjust accordingly–you may need to adjust both beet or just one.  Once the bubble on the level is centered, then tilt the washer forward; the back feet should adjust on their own.  Then lower the washer back down.  Move the level to each side of the washer to make sure it is level on both sides and then check the front again.  Make adjustments if necessary. 

After you are confident that everything is level take the wrench and tighten up the locknuts on the front washer feet.  Your washer should now be good and steady and should no longer wobble, and you just saved a lot of money by doing it yourself.
