How to make a decorative vase with items in your pantry

These instructions will show you how to create a customized vase using cheap materials, most of which you will find at home. You can personalize your vase to showcase your favorite colors, patterns and personal style. It takes less than 3 minutes to make and in the end you will have a professional-looking and custom-designed vase for your home decor.

What you will need to complete this easy project:

* Cannister from aatmeal, Pringles, nuts–or any other canister or cylindrical-shaped container

* Elmer’s Craft Bond Spray-on Glue or a similar spray adhesive product

* Scrapbook paper (I use prismatic paper and sometimes glittery scrapbook paper)

* Scissors

* Optional:  floral foam in case you’d like to add some silk flowers like I have in the photos.

The first step is to gather everything that you will need to make this vase, canister. You don’t have to use this as a vase, it can also be a pretty storage canister to keep things in. The canister you will be looking for is anything cylindrical such as an oatmeal, Pringles, SlimFast, powdered baby formula, or even a Planter’s peanuts can (short but cute). All of those mentioned will work and I am sure there are many others as well so be creative. You can also do the same with boxes, but cylinders are much easier.

Pringles can

Once you have your canister you will need a can of spray adhesive (I would not use glue because it may end up bumpy) the results with the spray are awesome. I recommend Elmer’s Craft Bond.

Next, you need to pick out what kind of paper you want. You will find the largest selection of paper in the scrapbooking section of craft stores. I found my holographic papers at Walmart; they are 12" X 12" and come in a variety of colors on a pad sort of the way construction papers do. You can also use glittered paper or even a photo. You don’t  want your paper to be very thin like notebook paper or tissue paper. Think of the thickness of an 8 x 10 photo; it doesn’t have to be quite that thick but it makes it goof-proof to be close to that thickness. You might need scissors or an exacto knife, depending on the size of your canister.

Elmers Craft Bond and prismatic paper

If you want to make this a canister, make sure you retain the lid. If you’d rather make it into a vase for a silk flower arrangement, then you will need something called florist’s foam. It’s usually green in color and you can find it at craft stores such as Michael’s. There are two different kinds, you can use oasis which is typically used for fresh flowers, or you can use the synthetic foam which is reusable in case you want to rearrange the flowers later on. I use the oasis because that is what I have handy. Styrofoam may work if that’s all you have but I can’t say because I haven’t tried that yet.

Oasis, wood roses and silk flowers

Then you cut the paper to fit your canister. If there are any "lips" around the top or bottom of the can, make sure you leave room for them; you just want to cover the part that is flat. Once it is cut to fit, you will spray the back of the paper with the adhesive. I use a box to put the paper in upside down in and then I spray the glue all over the back. You want to use a box so you can lay the paper down so that the glue doesn’t get on your pretty paper side. When you spray the glue it is gonna fly, so you may want to take this outside for the 10 seconds of spraying–and definitely remove your glasses.

Pick the sticky paper up and immediately adhere the paper to the can. The glue will not stay on your fingers. Once you wrap the can you are done and there is no drying time required at all. You can now use your can as a vase, as decoration or as storage. No one will know what it was before you made it. From now on it will just be a super cute vase in your choice of color and design.

Other ideas for your canisters:

* Young children can do this project too; get the kids involved if you’d like them to make their own personal canister. You can have them draw or paint a picture and use that as your paper. Make it into a container for crayons or a bank to keep in their room.

* This makes a nice gift for the person who has everything; just find out the person’s favorite color or match the decor of their house and fill it with silk flowers.

* You can use these canisters to store foods in, because they are made to keep foods fresh. You can leave them out on the counter since they are attractive, instead of hiding them away in the pantry.
