Mmmm. Popcorn. Whether you’re watching a movie, indulging while reading a book, or playing board games with friends and family, popcorn is a great snack.

I used to pop up a bag in the microwave (extra butter) and brew up some hot chocolate, then tote both out to the park with my man for some stargazing and snacking. These nights were great, with two comfort foods and terrific company.

Then, my routine swiftly changed. Why? Because my figure began to fail me.

Calories, saturated fats, sodium galore! Not to mention synthetic butter flavor causing lung disease?!? There was no way I was going to re-gain and retain my coveted firm curves if I kept this type of snacking up. But, I was unwilling to say goodbye to the routine I enjoyed so much. So, I educated myself and found much healthier alternatives could be obtained with a popcorn popper.

Here are some healthy ways to prepare popcorn with a popper:

  • With an air popper 5 cups of popcorn without butter is only 150 calories, and contains lots of fibre. You can control the amount of butter on your popcorn, limiting it to a small amount. You can use unsalted butter, and limit the amount of salt.
  • Or, try using olive oil as a coating instead. If you’re wanting to be ritzy, try white truffle oil - this is seriously to die for.
  • Another option is to sprinkle parmesan cheese in with your popcorn. This is savory, flavorful, and easy to do.
  • Get crazy with some herbs! Rosemary, again paired with the olive oil, is super fragrant and tasty. Another recommendation, which I have yet to try, is cumin. Experiment, and have fun. Generally, the herbs and spices you most enjoy will taste just as good on your popcorn.
  • Use sea salt instead of table salt. It is a much healthier alternative, and I find it tastier, too.

There are a wide variety of popcorn poppers out there, and I encourage you to do some research before buying. You’ll be able to figure out what is the best option for you. I ended up finding a great deal online, and haven’t been disappointed with my popper yet.

Happy and healthy popping!
