Halloween is fast approaching and with it comes the fun of making your own costume. With a little imagination and a couple of home recipes you can transform yourself or your child into any scary thing you like. From bloody bodies, oozing sores, and even broken bones, you can make them all in your own kitchen.

Fake blood is easy to make and can be used on old clothing, skin, and hair.

1. Pour about 1 cup of corn syrup into a container.

2. Add roughly 10 drops of red food colouring and no more than two drops of green food colouring to corn syrup,

3. Stir to mix well.

*Add food colouring to white craft glue in place of corn syrup for a less messy alternative.

A bald head for an old man, clown, or an Alien they can be make quickly and easily.

1. Tuck your hair up into an old bathing cap or if you don’t have one you can

find bathing caps in most Dollar Stores.

2. Depending on your costume you can either cover your ears with the cap or, simply cut around the ear area to have them show.

3. With a makeup sponge, apply the same colour makeup to the bathing cap, face including lips, eyebrows, neck, and hands.

Broken and protruding bones can be made by using the tapered end of an unused candle. Most Dollar Stores sell tapered candles in large and small size so you should be able to find the appropriate size.

1. Cut the wick off the top of a candle.

2. After deciding the length of exposed bone you want to use, cut the excess candle off from the bottom leaving the tapered end.

3. Cut the candle on an angle to allow the candle to lay against your skin.

4. With the slanted side down, attach the bone to your skin using liquid latex or white craft glue and hold in place until it is tacky enough to hold on it’s own.

5. Once the bone is securely in place you can add fake blood for a more realistic affect.

Scaly skin

1. To make scaly skin you will need to use a durable tissue such as cheap paper towel or a couple of layers of Kleenex.

2. Put a few tablespoons of white craft glue in a bowl and add a few drops of water to thin it a bit.

3. Add food colouring or a bit of non toxic craft paint to tint the fake skin and mix well.

4. Put the tissue where you wish to apply the scaly skin and apply enough glue to soak the paper.

5. Smooth the mixture with your fingers and let dry for about 15 minutes.

6. If you wish, when the skin is dry you can carefully make a hole in the hardened tissue to form a scab and add fake blood.

Happy Halloween
