Old fashioned plaster ceilings occasionally need to be replastered. In some cases, a homeowner has constructed a new ceiling as part of a home remodeling project. Ceiling plaster can be applied by almost anyone, although it is a messy project.

Ceiling Textures

While a plaster ceiling is usually the most common ceiling finish and texture, it is not the only type of ceiling finish possible. In the past, the most popular ceiling finish was a popcorn texture that was made of a thick wall texture that was sprayed onto the ceiling. It looked like small balls of texture that was similar to Styrofoam packing material.

Todayrsquo;s ceilings are often finished with a much smoother texture and it is common for homeowners to decide to remove existing popcorn ceiling materials to refinish their ceilings for a more contemporary appearance.

Another popular ceiling texture is the knockdown or skip trowel texture. This is a heavier texture and is common in homes with a Spanish style of decoration.

As stated, applying ceiling plaster is a messy project. Before stating this project, lay out drop cloths on the existing floor and over furniture for protection. It is also a good idea to wear protective safety glasses and a face mask to protect from bits of plaster that may drop down while being applied.

Supplies Needed

  • Air Compressor
  • Hopper
  • Spray Gun
  • Plaster
  • Painters Tape/Plastic Sheeting

Step 1

First you will need to tape off the walls and hang plastic sheeting. This is to protect the walls from falling plaster or over spray.

Step 2

Mix the plaster according to the instructions. You want to mix it thinly enough so that it will flow easily through the spray gun, but thick enough so that it will stick to the ceiling.

Step 3

Place the plaster in the hopper. Try a few experimental sprays on a piece of cardboard or paper to make sure that you have the correct spray nozzle setting and that the plaster flows easily through the gun. Make any needed adjustments to the nozzle and air compressor.

Step 4

Using even sweeping strokes begin to spray the plaster on the ceiling. The best approach is to start in one corner of the ceiling and slowly work your way outward and across the room.

Step 5

Once you have completed spraying the plaster on the ceiling, take a bright light and shine it up on the ceiling, looking for any blank spots that you have missed. Continue spraying plaster on the ceiling until the entire ceiling is covered and plaster has been completely applied.

Step 6

Let the plaster dry for at least 24 to 48 hours.

Step 7

Prime and paint to desired color.
